The Chase is over

SYDNEY Kings have decided to move on from dual-NBL championship-winning coach Chase Buford, choosing not to take up their contract option for a third year while he seeks new opportunities in the NBA. The club plans a global search for his replacement.

And that means that, once again, the club will overlook Rob Beveridge, the quality local coach under their noses.

With Buford pursuing an NBA role and the NBL season looming, the club made the tough call.

“The timing is challenging but we are at a point where we must make a call to ensure we have certainty about key roles,” Kings majority owner Paul Smith said in a statement today.

“Chase has played a monumental role in the success of the club over the past two seasons.”

While Buford was handed a championship roster in 2021-22, his performance in 2022-23 with three new and arguably lesser imports was exemplary.

The five-game championship series against New Zealand Breakers was a classic, with huge momentum shifts and Buford drawing outstanding contributions from his role players.
