Asia Cup G3: Cooks cools heat in kitchen

ASIA CUP MEN: Aussie starter Xavier Cooks played peacemaker, averting a potential on-court fracas as the Boomers eventually shook off Qatar 110-82 to complete Group A intrapool play with a 3-0 sweep, advancing to the Asia Cup's playoff round in Jeddah where next they will meet either host Saudi Arabia or the Philippines.

Qatar was playing for its tournament life, leading to high tensions less than four minutes into the contest.

Dishing a sweet assist for a corner three from Jack McVeigh, William "Davo" Hickey bumped Qatar's star Brandon Goodwin on his way downcourt and he leapt to his feet, ready to engage him in non-basketball action.

Cooks caught Goodwin running at Hickey and was able to calm fraying tensions as Boomers coach Adam Caporn entered the court and Qatar's equivalent Hakan Demir remonstrated with Aussie players.

The end result was an unsportsmanlike foul on Hickey and technical fouls against Goodwin and Demir before play could resume.

Australia tied the game late in the first, then Owen Foxwell found Cooks with a pinpoint pass for a score at the buzzer and a 22-20 Boomers lead.

A Reyne Smith triple meant Australia led 46-43 at halftime and that blew out further as the Boomers took the second half 64-39.

Jaylin Galloway led the way again with an equal game-high 24 points, compiled at 80 per cent and including 2-of-3 threes, all 12 players on the roster again on the scoresheet.

Hickey had 15 points with five rebounds, eight assists, a steal and a block, Smith shooting his 15 points at 67 per cent.

Harry Wessels added eight points and six boards in 12 minutes as Australia marched ahead in its attempt to complete an Asia Cup threepeat.
