Asia Cup SF: Bravo Davo as Boomers reign over Iran

ASIA CUP MEN: Only China, which 20 years ago was the last team to lift three Asia Cups in succession, now stands in Australia's way of completing a clean sweep threepeat, after William "Davo" Hickey led the Boomers to a 92-48 semi final rout of Iran overnight in Jeddah.

China ultimately outlasted New Zealand in the other semi final 98-84 after producing a match-winning 30-18 final period, the Tall Blacks now playing for Bronze after a memorable tournament which included turning back a 21-point deficit in the quarter-finals before advancing past Lebanon 90-86.

Iran started full of pluck but once Jack McVeigh (17 points at 50 per cent in 20 minutes) struck a 3-pointer to tie the game at 15-15, it was all Australia the rest of the way.

The last play of the quarter was indicative of what was to follow, Xavier Cooks racing the ball forward for a driving shot attempt which Jack White (11 points at 80 per cent in 19 minutes) collected, throwing down a thundering dunk for a 27-20 buffer.

Owen Foxwell marshalled the Boomers with such aplomb, Hickey needed to offer something special and he did just that. In 15 minutes, he had 14 points at 56 per cent, six rebounds and six assists.

The two sweet dishes that stood out were the ones he whipped to Harry Wessels (16 points at 60 per cent) and White to close the first half on a pair of mammoth dunks and a 51-29 buffer.

The Boomers' defence was slick and organised, containing the Iranians to nine and eight point second and third periods respectively, firmly closing the door on any type of comeback.

Coach Adam Caporn had the luxury of clearing his bench for bigger minutes as every player again scored, the march continuing into the Final.
