All-Aussies off to China

LONDON Olympian David Barlow has a chance to re-establish himself next month as a member of the NBL’s All-Australian team for a three-match series against China’s national team.

Barlow missed the 2015-16 season with Melbourne United with what originally was feared to be a career-ending Achilles injury but now has a chance to show potential suitors he still has what it takes as a member of the 11-man team for games in Nanning on May 6, Guangzhou on May 8 and in Beijing on May 10.

COMEBACK KID: David Barlow has faced China before.

The series is part of relationship-building exercise between the NBL and the CBA (China Basketball Association), with Boomers boss and new Brisbane Bullets’ head honcho Andrej Lemanis to coach the League’s select.

Of course, you know all this if you visited here last month (see below) but with the games to be televised on China TV Station CCTV5, the audience reach will be to about 1.2 billion people.

BREAKING NEWS: In March, here.

That’s huge exposure for our guys, NBL GM Jeremy Loeliger confirming negotiations also are under way for coverage on Australian TV.

“The week-long series is an integral part of the NBL’s focus on strategic growth and expansion, in partnership with FIBA, Basketball Australia and the China Basketball Association,” Loeliger said.

“We have made no secret of our desire to see the League expand and strengthen further.

“In the long term we see Asia having a greater involvement in our Australian NBL season as well as in friendly tournaments.”

While the League ultimately has a plan to intergrate a Chinese team into our NBL, it is still tough to see fans in places such as Adelaide, Sydney or Wollongong, for example, being as excited about a foreign team in their venue as a Perth, Melbourne or Sydney respectively.

But an Asian Champions League, akin to soccer, would be a much easier sell.

The NBL All-Australian team is: David Barlow (Free Agent), Todd Blanchfield (Melbourne United), Jason Cadee (Sydney Kings), Tom Garlepp (Sydney Kings), Adam Gibson (Brisbane Bullets), Daniel Kickert (Brisbane Bullets), Majok Majok (Melbourne United), Mitch Norton (Illawarra Hawks), Clint Steindl (Free Agent), Jesse Wagstaff (Perth Wildcats), Lucas Walker (Free Agent). Head Coach: Andrej Lemanis (Australian Boomers, Brisbane Bullets); Asst Coach: Mick Downer (Brisbane Bullets); Physio: Nick Harrison (Melbourne United).
