All good in the Land of Nod
TweetAS predicted here last week, all is well on the "FIBA Oceania qualification for the NBL" front. (Although, if it looks like an old cabbage and smells like an old cabbage, it’s probably an old cabbage.)
If you aren't up-to-speed on what's been going on in regard to FIBA Oceania a year ago requesting Basketball Australia consider Pacific Islanders as locals, then perhaps look back at a couple of the relevant blogs here in the past 10 days.
NBL chief executive Fraser Neill has rung to say the "controversy" is no more. (Even though the definition of "local" still isn't part of NBL bylaws.)
"We have had a confidential report from BA," Neill said in reference to the new eligibility criteria.
"The BA decision says: 'If a player is deemed eligible by FIBA, then he will be treated as a domestic player.'
"We (the NBL) don't decide who is eligible to represent countries.
"That's not our job.
"That's FIBA's decision.
"Once they make that decision, then we'll treat them the same as Australian or New Zealand players."
Nice. No mention of the five-year residency stipulation former FIBA Oceania secretary-general Steve Smith also requested be part of any new eligibility definition for Pacific Islanders.
But hey, if FIBA hasn't minuted that, why should BA?
THE Townsville Crocodiles may have won their first NBL silverware with the 2014 Loggins-Bruton Cup but it's nothing new for coach Shawn Dennis.
When Newcastle Falcons beat Perth 117-99 in the 1988 Aussie Tapes Classic, Shawn's outstanding grand final performance earnt him match MVP honors and with it, a microwave oven!
Teammate Jerry Everett was understandably filthy. Jerry was named tournament MVP and received a glass vase for his trouble!
I hear Shawn's microwave lasted about 20-plus years while Jerry's vase may have gone the way of James Ennis' All Star Five trophy...
MEANWHILE, no truth in rumours Sydney Kings have relocated Josh Childress to the following address and have asked FIBA Oceania for a clarification as to his new eligibility status:http://www.onthehouse.com.au/reports/property_profile/7684354/21_Guam_Street_SHORTLAND_NSW_2307/
AND just in case you were wondering, according to this Wildcats paperwork below (checklist #5), even THEY think Earnest Ross is a new American recruit ... um, side note, born in Guam...
