Boomers clinch Oceania
TweetA DEVASTATING 28-7 third period by the Boomers today clinched the Oceania Championship 76-63, New Zealand unable to sustain its intensity after halftime.
The win, paced by Patty Mills' 21 points, made it a 2-0 series sweep, Australia taking the first leg 70-59 in Auckland on Wednesday.
Today's game had its share of niggle, with Tall Blacks new faces Reuben Te Rangi and Jack Salt both giving up unsportsmanlike fouls as the Boomers bolted away.
Fans at AIS Arena in Canberra not only saw the present but also the future in the blistering third period.
Trailing 33-39 at halftime, the Boomers blasted the Tall Blacks with a 10-0 start to the second half.
Mills started the rally with a steal - he finished with five - and lay-up.
Joe Ingles (12 points, five assists) saved a ball, throwing it back to Mills trailing and he drained a three-pointer.
Then Ingles drove and scored, adding a bonus free throw as the difference in class began to become apparent.
Australia forced a 24-second violation on the Kiwis' next forward foray before sweet passing from Mills to Ingles to Anthony Petrie saw him flip in a reverse basket.
That made it 43-39 before Corey Webster broke New Zealand's drought but it made little difference as Mills stuck another triple.
When Mills stole the ball from Everard Bartlett, frustrations boiled over and Te Rangi put him to the floor to cop the game's first unsportsmanlike.
Mills converted both resultant free throws, then swished a three on the additional possession for a 53-41 lead.
Burgeoning young talent Cam Bairstow rejected a shot by BJ Anthony, then was monstered by Alex Pledger at the other end, sticking both free throws.
Australia was on a 22-2 roll as Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis sent Dante Exum into the fray, his entrance marked by loud crowd appreciation.
A free throw by Adam Gibson extended the run to 23-2 before David Andersen lobbed a ball for Exum to finish.
And another future star, Ryan Broekhoff closed the quarter with a three.
Australia kept New Zealand to 3-of-13 shooting for the period to lead 61-46, the Oceania Championship in the bag.
The Boomers had closed the first quarter strongly with Ben Simmons throwing down a dunk before a terrific last defensive stand on New Zealand's final possession, Jarrod Kenny stripped of the ball.
But the Tall Blacks owned the second period, BJ Anthony starting the scoring with a three from the top of the key.
New Zealand's scoring star of the first game, Webster was held pointless in the first period but was 4-of-4 in the second to have 10 points by halftime.
His first three followed Anthony's, sweeping the Tall Blacks from 17-20 down at the break to 23-20 ahead inside two minutes.
Mills fed Bairstow for a dunk, then swished a three as the teams traded baskets.
With 4:16 to the main interval, Gibson scored off a cut for 30-27.
But Kiwi guard Kenny erased it with a triple which launched a 9-0 Tall Blacks outburst.
An unusually subdued Tom Abercrombie jumped into the contest and Mika Vukona went into the break with six rebounds.
The Aussies were trailing 30-36 when Matthew Dellavedova sank a three-pointer but Webster wiped that away as New Zealand took a 39-33 lead into the break.
It was shades of the opening game in Auckland where the Tall Blacks led 39-32 at halftime.
Again, they could not resist the Aussies after the main break.
AUSTRALIA BOOMERS 76 (Mills 21, Ingles 12, Gibson 11) d NEW ZEALAND TALL BLACKS 63 (Webster 16, Frank 11, Abercrombie 10) at AIS Arena. Australia wins series 2-0.
