Brown 76ers rumor has legs

HAVE precious little to base this on but I'm thinking our very own Brett Brown will shortly officially be named head coach of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers.

No, I haven't spoken lately with Andrej Lemanis' predecessor as Boomers' coach but I just made a note of the fact New York's Daily News newspaper predicted Brett had the gig back on NBA Draft day.

The 76ers came out strongly, denying the report.

Well here's the thing.

The Philadelphia 76ers today hired Scott O'Neil as their new chief executive officer.

The former Madison Square Garden president replaces Adam Aron, who will remain team co-owner and board member.

So what, I hear you ask?

On June 22, the NY Daily News reported Aron was going to be replaced.

The 76ers came out strongly, denying the report.

Yes well, time has shown that the Daily News clearly has a very reliable source within the Sixers organisation.

They got it right with Aron, why should we not think they got it right with Brown?

Flimsy, I admit. But pretty interesting.

EXPECT good news out of the new NBL Pty Ltd any day now as the demerger from Basketball Australia is finalised.

ADELAIDE continues its pursuit of Gary Ervin while the Kings and Taipans confirm Ben Allen and Stevie Weigh respectively in a decent news day for the NBL.

The Ervin latest is at: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/basketball/the-adelaide-36ers-are-pulling-out-all-the-stops-to-sign-gary-ervin/story-fnii09ki-1226676540110

FREE agent craziness is sweeping the NBA with our new almost-favorite team, Cleveland Cavs - home of the Lone Aussie Kyrie Irving, and destination of Matthew Dellavedova and Chris Goulding - making a big offer to Andrew Bynum.

Dallas is also pursuing the 7-foot enigma who did not play a game last season with the 76ers after enjoying a strong career before being traded from the LA Lakers.

Bynum played for Cavaliers coach Mike Brown two seasons ago in LA, averaging 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds - both career highs.

If the Cavs sign Bynum, and assuming he's healthy, they would move back into playoff contention in the Eastern Conference, the big man joining Irving, Brazilian star Anderson Varejao, Tristan Thompson, Dion Waiters and Anthony Bennett, the No. 1 overall pick in last month's NBA draft.

With Dwight Howard giving the Lakers a rocket, they have secured 7-foot centre Chris Kaman for one year at $3.2 million.

It will be Kaman's second straight season on a one-year contract after enduring the fewest minutes of his career, struggling in coach Rick Carlisle's system at Dallas.

Kaman, 31, spent the first eight years of his career with the Los Angeles Clippers and was an All-Star in 2009-10, averaging a career-high 18.5 points per game.

Australia's other team, Golden State Warriors, have signed free agent Marreese Speights, who averaged 10.2 points and 5.1 rebounds in the final 39 games with Cleveland after being traded by Memphis.

THE WNBL has signed Peak as its official clothing sponsor for three years.

The deal gives Peak exclusive team wear rights to the WNBL, providing clubs with "high quality on-court, off-court and training merchandise''.

Peak is a global partner of FIBA.

If you are truly curious, you can track down BA's social sites and take a, well, "peek" at some of the new merchandise.

RUMOR Department. Remember where you read it first but my (e)mail has Matt Burston playing centre for the Cairns Taipans next NBL season.

NEWS Ben Allen has signed with Sydney Kings has led to a surprising surge in season ticket sales ... in Townsville.

TO paraphrase Noeline Armstrong, BA landing Virgin VIP room privileges for the WNBL is "one small step for woman, a giant leap for womankind."
