Brisbane gearing to blaze back into WNBL

JUST in case you missed our recent WNBL off-season deep dive, look out because the lack of a league presence in Brisbane is coming to a sudden halt. It looks very much that after Tasmania Jewels enter the league in 2026-27, a new Brisbane franchise will be next in 2027-28.
The WNBL has not had a club in Brisbane since the Blazers finished last in 1998. They entered the league in its second year in 1982, with their best finish a semi final exit in 1986.
Logan Thunder represented South East Queensland from 2008-2014.
For one season in 2015-16, the South East Queensland Stars, playing out of Logan, competed in the WNBL.
But their presence was short-lived, the club rescued from financial woes with incoming sponsors La Trobe Financial and Griffith University devising a rescue package that allowed the Stars to play out their final five games of the season.
A decade later and there is strong movement toward suiting up a new Brisbane team to bring the WNBL back to a 10-team competition.
Expect a formal announcement most likely during the 2026-27 season, the nickname and colours still under discussion.
