Courtney, Kendric MVPs show Spirit, Wildcats just why

TOWNSVILLE's Rachael Sporn Medallist and Sydney's Larry Sengstock Medallist - that is the defending respective WNBL and NBL championship series MVPs - stepped up this week to guide their spluttering teams to vital road wins over highly-rated opponents.
The Kings shellshocked the Wildcats in Perth with an unforgettable scoring spree, hitting their first 10 field goal attempts before going 13-of-14 for the period (Jayden Stone, shame on you!) to lead 33-17 after one Ignite Cup quarter.
Davis, schooled by Cole Anthony last round in Sydney's road loss at Melbourne on top of a couple of lesser games, opened the scoring and compiled 16 (without a miss) of his 24 points in that definitive first term.
It was an amazing shooting performance by the Kings, Torrey Craig finishing with 26 points at 55 per cent, Makuach Maluach (14 with 4-of-5 threes), Andrew Carr 15 points at 56 per cent and 8 rebounds.
Davis added 7 rebounds, 9 assists and 2 steals to his tally, Perth buried in such a deep hole it took the rest of the game to try and exhume itself.
Brandon Knight (game-high 27 points, 5 boards, 4 assists) was up for it and when Elijah Pepper found his range, the Wildcats came hurtling back into calculations.
Unfortunately for the home team it was too big a chasm and any time Perth truly threatened, Sydney had the answer, Tyler Robertson (11 points, 3-of-3 threes) another in a long line of Kings staving off the Wildcats.
Perth trailed 0-10, 5-23 and 7-25 before coach John Rillie called time-out, the game already long lost.
Coming off a home loss to Sydney (with a road loss to Perth also on its record), Townsville hit Bendigo to close WNBL Round 2 looking for some measure of its true identity.
It found it during a 22-13 second quarter, followed by a 26-14 third which left the Spirit choking on the Fire's fumes.
Alex Fowler (19 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and a block) was back to her Opals best, and Lauren Jensen had 6-of-12 threes in her 22-point return.
Abbey Ellis (14 points, 7 assists) ran the show with her customary aplomb which helped compensate Alicia Froling only scoring two points but accompanying it with a game-high 12 rebounds.
The true ace for Townsville was Woods though, who sank 5-of-7 back-breaking threes in her 27 points at a wicked 73 per cent. And she supported her scoring spree with 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals to very much lead from the front, import Marie Gulich hamstrung by foul woes.
Playing without veteran centre Marianna Tolo, Bendigo drew a career-high 20 points from Kelsey Rees that included 3-of-6 triples.
But having Kelsey Griffin scoring 3 points on 1-of-10 shooting, fellow starter Casey Samuels only adding 2 and Kelly Wilson scoreless threw much onto the shoulders of Jade Melbourne (19 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists) and Olivia Pollerd (14 points, 9 rebounds).
In the end, it proved too much.
