Delly has fire in the belly
Tweet"MATTHEW Dellavedova to Aron Baynes for the dunk!'' For many of us glued to the TV during the London Olympics, those eight words were part of our regular Boomer highlights.
More than a few people following the varying possibilities out of the NBA Draft on Friday morning (Australian time), are predicting the Delly-to-Baynes show will reunite at the Western Conference champion San Antonio Spurs.
Now that Patty Mills has exercised his option to stay with the Spurs, point-guard-heavy San Antonio seems a less likely destination for another of Australia's burgeoning basketball talents.
Mills, a St Mary's College alumni and Boomer teammate, knows Dellavedova will go through his own private hell, just as Brisbane's 208cm Washington State University forward Brock Motum will, waiting for their name to be called.
Only 60 players will experience that pleasure in Brooklyn, New York.
In 2009 and with a solid Beijing Olympics behind him - at which he had the better of USA and NBA superstar Chris Paul - Mills still had to wait for a tension-packed five hours as the made-for-TV event unfolded.
He finally was taken at 55 by the Portland Trailblazers.
Dellavedova also had a terrific Olympics last year in London, which comes on top of a stellar college career at St Mary's.
But, like Motum - whose numbers at WSU include leading the Pac-12 Conference in both his junior and senior years but has had to push his cause through tryouts at numerous NBA locations ("If it's Tuesday, this must be Indiana") - Dellavedova has been on the road, showing his wares.
So far he has had stops in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Brooklyn, Denver, Utah, New Jersey and Houston.
Coaching staff and talent scouts watch the sessions hoping to find that special player who may not be on the radar.
"I'm trying to show teams I can defend the short, quick point guards because I think it (being slow) is a little bit of a misconception about me," the talented playmaker told the media after his recent tryout with the Phoenix Suns.
Dellavedova, 22 and 193cm from Maryborough in Victoria, is a tough nut, growing up playing Aussie Rules. That toughness has held him in good stead.
And his stock is rising, his eye-catching Olympics and impressive workouts coming on top of four stand-out years at California's St Mary's College, which further was highlighted recently when he was named West Coast Conference Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Four seasons as a starter with the Gaels sees Delly ranked first all-time for St Mary's in points, assists, minutes played, three-pointers made and attempted, free throw percentage, games played, starts and wins.
As a senior he averaged 15.8 ppg, 6.4 apg, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 steals.
His honors include the WCC All-Freshman Team, one All-WCC Honorable Mention, three All-WCC Teams, the 2012 WCC Tournament MVP, 2012 WCC Player of the Year, two AP All-America Honorable Mentions (Junior and Senior) and he is a two-time Bob Cousy Award Finalist (Junior and Senior).
"His best ability is he is a leader on the court," Mills says.
Whether his court sense and high basketball IQ makes a positive difference on Friday remains to be seen but some draft analysts see the Memphis Grizzlies selecting him with the 60th pick.
That's if the Spurs don't pounce at 58.
Either way, he has a long wait ahead, a nation following his fortunes with equal interest.
THE "Kiwi Phenom" Steven Adams is another player a nation will be following with the same interest as Aussies along for the ride with Dellavedova and Motum.
From Rotorua, the 212cm Adams is a diamond-in-the-rough who averaged 7.2 points and 6.3 rebounds in his freshman season for Pittsburgh in the Big East.
He went out with a bang, producing a 13-point, 11-rebound double in a loss to Wichita State in the NCAA Tournament.
Adams, who turns 20 next month, has a huge upside but is still very much a project.
But which NBA franchise doesn't want a 7-foot project with athleticism and talent?
