FLASHBACK 144: May, 1972 - Club C'ship Preview


*FLASHBACKS, my irregular "lucky dip" where I just reach into my drawers of old Australian basketball stuff and transcribe or post whatever I find for you.*

Before the NBL launched in 1979, for the preceding decade (1970-79) the journey to find the best club team in the nation was determined at the annual Australian Club Championship tournament.

In 1970 and 1971, Melbourne Church (eventually evolving into Melbourne Tigers) reigned supreme in the carnivals in melnbopurne and Adelaide respectively.

The 1972 ACC was held in Newcastle. The NSW state association at the time boasted a terrific regular magazine. It dedicated most of its May, 1972 issue to the ACC which we reproduce below here, on the tournament's 53rd anniversary.

It's a fascinating revisit of a glorious bygone era, featuring the sport's biggest names of the time.
