Goulding strikes gold at Knox

MELBOURNE Tigers' talented swingman Chris Goulding could not have been happier with his on-court work-out yesterday with Cleveland Cavaliers' All Star playmaker Kyrie Irving.

Goulding went through the paces Cavs assistant coach Phil Handy ran at the individuals session, watched in some awe by 1,500 fans at the State Basketball Centre in Knox.

Ironically Goulding knows Handy, who was an NBL import with the Tigers and West Sydney before turning to coaching.

Goulding's coach at Gold Coast Blaze, now Adelaide 36ers coach Joey Wright, knew Handy.

"Phil came out to coach with Joey at the Blaze," Goulding said.

"He was under the impression our (NBL) season had just finished.

"He's at Cleveland now and friends with Mike Brown."

Brown, who previously coached in the NBA at Cleveland, brought Handy onto his staff during his tenure as LA Lakers' head coach.

He was fired last season and now is back at the Cavaliers in an assistant capacity, Handy joining him there.

"Phil is out here with Kyrie working on skill development and was miked up for our (individuals) session," Goulding said.

"It was early in the morning so it was pretty cold and quiet initially. But Phil was speaking to the crowd, telling them what we were doing with the ball handling and one-on-one skills.

"And Kyrie got them going too.

"I shot fairly well but Kyrie shot the hell out of it."

Actually, the correct basketball term is "shot the shit out of it" and that was the description most onlookers gave of Goulding's shooting. So if Irving shot even better, then, wow.

Goulding said he did not play any one-on-one against the Melbourne-born Cavs stud.

"I didn't tape," he explained.

"And frankly, I don't think (Tigers' coach) Chris (Anstey) wanted to see me sliding all over the floor trying to keep up with Kyrie's moves.

"I thanked Kyrie and his camp for giving me the opportunity. He was cool, we had some fun trying to put each other off during our shooting games."

As for the rumors Goulding could get a look in at Cavs' camp, fellow Aussie Matthew Dellavedova  playing for Cleveland at the Las Vegas summer pro league and with a try-out for their training camp, he said it was just speculation.

"If the opportunity comes up and I can get some work in with Phil and make my way over there (to the US), I would go," Goulding said.

"But Phil has to check his schedule. There's no invitation to go to Cavs camp, or anything like that though."

Not that the 2012-13 NBL All Star Game MVP didn't show he has game. That, he most certainly did.

THE Adelaide 36ers' #wewantgary Twitter campaign to influence Gary Ervin into making the switch to Sixers' blue is in full swing.

Jump on board. It's going strong.

CAIRNS Taipans swingman Aaron Grabau has joined his uniform in retirement.

Unsure if the club plans to honor his contribution at its first home game by having fans stand, push, hold, and shove the nearest spectator in homage or, perhaps, formally hang up his boots next to his #8.

Whatever, in all seriousness Grabau made the most of his abilities and was a great role player and club man for Cairns.

He has another NBL season in him for sure but life beyond bouncing balls beckons and it is always great to be able to go on your own terms and especially while you are still wanted.

He will be missed.

FIRST it was NBA superstar Kyrie Irving in Oz this week giving Melbourne kids the benefit of his burgeoning expertise.

Then it was legendary college coach Lute Olson conducting a special free coaching clinic at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence in Redfern.

Next it is Chicago Bulls' star Luol Deng in Melbourne to visit family.

Who knows? You might see him at Boronia watching the South Sudanese Australian National Classic.

Clearly, Down Under is the place for ballers to be!
