Harrowing time to gaze back

THE Harrowers have replaced the Gazes as Australian elite basketball’s First Family.

They mean every bit as much to the WNBL as Andrew and Lindsay did to the NBL where they won two Championships and Drewy almost wrenched his father’s head off with his post-Grand Final embrace in 1993.

Seems like only yesterday.

Bernie and Kristi are on course for a second Championship and now close 2013 as the WNBL’s Coach and Player of the Month for November.

Seems like only yesterday they were pairing up to bring Bendigo Spirit the club and city’s first WNBL crown and, indeed, it came only 20 years after the Gazes got the job done for the first time for the Tigers.

The Spirit went 6-0 to sweep November and Kristi rediscovered her own touch with a Player of the Week effort in there against Adelaide.

Bendigo is on a club record 11-game winning streak which dates back to its opening round road loss to Grand Final victim Townsville Fire.

If the Spirit can go all the way again in 2014, the Harrowers will have their second title to match the Gaze combination.

WHEN Sydney Flames released Ashley Gayle last week we should have guessed a replacement player already was in the mix.

After all, that’s been the Flames’ form for a long time now.

If things aren’t working, just buy some more players.

I mean, when Sydney released Gayle officially on Friday, the club’s statement was: “The club is currently searching for a replacement for Gayle.”

And here we are, Tuesday and the Flames have not only announced Louisiana State University and USA U19 World Championship gold medallist LaSondra Barrett is their new signing but she arrived this morning!

Wow. That’s fast work there, Sydney.

Even Jesse Sanders would be impressed.

Drafted in 2012 at No.10 by the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, Barrett played for Ramat Hasharon in the 2012-13 Israeli Female Basketball Premier League.

The 188cm forward debuts for Sydney this weekend against Dandenong and Bendigo.

Great to have another big talent in the WNBL and toupees off toi the Flames' super-duper speed-recruiting performance. Cough.
