PERTH Lynx have landed on their feet ahead of the 2026-27 WNBL season, today announcing they have replaced injured superstar Sami Whitcomb with Ballarat-born Washington Mystics WNBA starter Georgia Amoore. Also forced out of the Opals' FIBA World Cup campaign next month, Whitcomb now is sidelined for the season.

For the Opals, national coach Sandy Brondello chose to go against the idea of "like-for-like,"
overlooking fellow PGs Amoore and Courtney Woods in favour of Townsville Fire's WNBL championship heroine Miela Sowah.

With the Fire leading Perth in the best-of-three Grand Finals 1-0, it was Sowah who hit the 3-point basket at the close of regulation to force Game 2 into overtime after Lynx coach Ryan Petrik subbed out 211cm centre Han Xu with 12.5 seconds left and his side ahead by three.

Remember, Xu was named the WNBL's Defensive Player, yet for this vital defensive play, Petrik went small!

Talk about blowing a game (and with it, the championship), Sowah scored the match-tying bucket after she missed a quick attempt but teammate Chantel Horvat grabbed the offensive rebound to give her a second chance. The rest is Fire championship history.

Sowah now will join the Opals for the World Cup in Berlin from September 4.

Meanwhile Perth lost 2025 starters Xu to Geelong Venom, Alex Wilson to Sydney Flames and Amy Atwell to Canberra Capitals.

Regaining naturalised Opals captain Whitcomb softened the blow until her revelation the knee injury which forced her out of the national team for the World Cup needed a further season of inactivity for her to fully recover. 

Whitcomb was clearly shattered by the news but stepped up for her WNBL club by bringing Amoore into the equation, the latter responding yesterday against Sami's Phoenix Mercury with a career best 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting (6-of-11 threes) as Washington won 80-73.

In the fourth quarter, Amoore had 16 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting. She also compiled four assists, two rebounds and two steals.  

"Hey Lynx fans, I'm super excited. Sami hooked me up. She's the reason I have a job in the off-season! I'm super excited to get home and be a part of the organisation soon," Amoore said in a Instagram post today.
