The long hunt is over for Jordan

IT was worth the wait for Woodville captain Jordan Hunter, the former playmaker of the New Zealand Tall Ferns who finally won an NBL1 Central crown tonight as her Warriors made history, taking down Sturt 73-65 in the grand final at Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

Woodville, featuring Erin Phillips in her final game ahead of retirement from competitive sport, dominated from start-to-finish, the final scoreline deceptively flattering to Sturt.

In pursuit of the club's historic first women's championship and first grand final appearace since its solitary losing effort in 1997, Woodville seized the initiative through Jasmin Fejo and wrapped it with a 24-11 second period.

Grand final MVP Laura Erikstrup had 15 of her match-high 23 points by halftime and Ida Andersson struck a game-high four threes as Woodville kept Sturt chasing it all night.

Hunter arrived from New Zealand to play WNBL with Adelaide Lightning and supplemented that by playing locally with Sturt.

Ultimately lured to West Adelaide, she led the Bearcats - with Fejo as a burgeoning star teammate - back to the playoffs before crossing to South Adelaide for several "near miss" finals campaigns.

Tonight, she achieved that elusive NBL1 Central championship with a 10-point, eight rebounds and five assists contribution, finally able to raise the trophy.

Phillips (right) finished her career as she began it - a winner, whether on a hard wood floor or on the grass of a football field. She compiled seven points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal in the final.

Erikstrup's double-double of 23 points and 13 boards stood out, Sturt once again left to lament what might have been.

Not so for Jordan. The mountain top has finally been claimed.

Perth Wildcats-bound Cam Huefner took MVP honours as West Adelaide added to its men's trophy cabinet with an 83-73 win over Central District Lions.

Huefner threw down a monster dunk in his 22 points, which he delivered at 64 per cent. Perth-bound teammate Lat Mayen also had claims on the MVP with a 26-point, 10-rebound, three assist, two steal return and Keanu Rasmussen more than made his presence felt.

For coach Dean Nyberg, it was his fifth NBL1 Central championship.

The Lions, who have one title dating back to 1984 - the 40th reunion celebration last year was very special - lost no admirers for the manner in which they fought this out.

Koen Sapwell even tickled a triple-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.
