Lightning on road to start WNBL season

THE new-look Adelaide Lightning will open their WNBL season on the road in Perth against West Coast Waves on October 18.

The WNBL tomorrow will release its full draw and Adelaide will have seven of its 11 home games as double-headers with the NBL’s 36ers.

In fact their home-opener will be in a double-header as Lightning host Melbourne Boomers at Adelaide Arena the following Thursday.

Playing on a Thursday in itself will be something of a new innovation, the 36ers hosting Wollongong Hawks in the header's second leg.

Lightning playing three of their first four games away has not daunted rookie head coach Jeremi Moule who has seen the positive side to the schedule.

“I’m probably not too concerned at the way the draw falls,” he said.

“You have to play everybody anyway and travelling can bring together a newish group. This will be a fairly new group.”

Adelaide’s game against Canberra Capitals at Lauren Jackson Sports Centre in Albury on November 29 will be the first time Alex Bunton and Carley Mijovic face their former club.

Lightning swingman Jess Foley is not expected to miss any games after recently having an ankle scope.

“She’s had to play with discomfort in the past so she will probably be able to play more pain-free this season,” Moule said.

“It was supposed to take her six weeks to get back to full activity and she had it (the scope) two weeks ago so it should be fine.”

Adelaide expects to announce a new off-guard signing soon and still is in the market for a back-up point guard.

The WNBL Grand Final - still just a one-off even though coaches (including Opals coach Brendan Joyce) and players have been trying to get Basketball Australia to recognise it is time to go best-of-three - is scheduled for Sunday, March 8.
