Madgen odd player out with new signing

OPAL-in-waiting Tess Madgen has been released by the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury.

The Mercury’s acquisition of star Spanish guard Marta Xargay has led to the WNBA franchise releasing the talented Melbourne Boomers swingman after eight games.

Madgen was part of a heavily Aussie-influenced Phoenix team, coached by Sandra Brondello.

She was in her rookie season alongside fellow Aussies Leilani Mitchell and Cayla Francis.

Xargay, 24 and a 3-point shooting specialist guard, helped Spain to a third-place finish at Eurobasket 2015, averaging 9.6 points, 2.4 assists, 2.3 rebounds and a team-high 1.6 steals during the 10-game tournament.
