Melbourne, Perth ... showdown looming

MELBOURNE and Perth are the only remaining unbeaten teams after just 11 games of the 2015-16 NBL season, the showdown between the two power clubs looming.

It took a mere nine games before everyone was registed in the Wins column and the two power clubs last night maintained their winning starts at home.

From 50-50 in the third quarter, United motored away from Adelaide as Daniel Kickert shot the visitors off the floor, Kicks with 6-of-9 threes in his game-high 22 points for the 84-75 win.

Melbourne hit 14-of-31 triples but its six threes in the third broke open an otherwise tight game, Steve Holt, Kickert, Todd Blanchfield, Chris Goulding (X2) and Nate Tomlinson all successful in the perimeter avalanche.

Once the lead ballooned into double figures, Adelaide lacked the scorepower to come back and now faces some tough decisions this week ahead of a tough home/away run with Cairns/Sydney.

The news Corey Webster's first NBA bid had fallen short and he would soon be back from New Orleans Pelicans and in Breakers black (or blue), must have helped energise his team, New Zealand taking it up to the Wildcats at Perth Arena.

Tom Abercrombie made some impressive pressure baskets in the end game for the Breakers and Jermaine Beal was huge all night for Perth, finishing with 19 points and six assists.

Everard Barlett's 17 points included 5-of-8 threes as the Breakers refused to break.

Matt Knight, able to spend time at power forward now Nathan Jawai is a Perth fixture, had a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double and again was very effective.

BEAST OF BAMAGA: Nate Jawai's keyway presence is making life easier for Matt Knight.

In the end, it was Kiwi guard Jarrod Kenny who swished a three for the Wildcats to break his countrymen's hearts, Perth winning 83-80 in the round's second thriller.

Last night: UNITED 84 (Kickert 22, Warrick 16, Goulding 14, Holt 11, Blanchfield 10; Majok 8 rebs; Holt 7 assts) d 36ERS 75 (Gibson 17, Johnson 15, McNeaill, Ere 10; Johnson 10 rebs; Gibson 3 assts) at Hisense Arena. WILDCATS 83 (Beal 19, Knight, Wagstaff 14, Prather 11; Knight 12 rebs; Beal 6 assts) d BREAKERS 80 (Abercrombie 23, Ce Jackson 19, Barlett 17; Ch Jackson 15 rebs; McDonald, Ce Jackson 3 assts) at Perth Arena.

Tonight: Sydney at home after a loss and Illawarra on the road after a win makes today's NSW derby another cut-throat affair. If Josh Childress suits, my money is on the Kings to get it done. If he doesn't, I'm liking the Hawks.

Up north, the first of the much-anticipated Reptile Rumbles unfolds in Cairns, the Taipans with much to prove after their squelch in Sydney, the same team Townsville beat this week. Only homecourt advantage has me lean toward the Orange County crew.
