NBA East: Now for Game 7
TweetSIX games. That's how many NBA pundits largely expected Indiana to squeeze out before being eliminated by reigning champion Miami in the Eastern Conference Final.
But after their decisive 91-77 win today, the Pacers have forced a deciding Game 7 in Miami on Tuesday which, again, has the experts saying the obvious - the Heat will bounce back and win by double digits.
It has been their way, though in Game 6 the Big Three was back to the Omnipotent One as LeBron James fought a lone hand against the inevitable.
Pacers pivot Roy Hibbert paired 24 points with 11 rebounds, made Miami miss shots with his defensive presence, and got unexpected help from David West, who was questionable with a respiratory issue which forced him to miss the pre-game shoot.
Paul George delivered 28 points, eight rebounds and five assists and the Pacers opened the third quarter on a 14-2 run, the Heat going 1-of-11 from the floor, Indiana ahead by as much as 17 (66-49) late in the third.
Miami did not get closer than four the rest of the way.
"Myself and David (West), we throw ourselves in the fray, in the paint. We like to muck it up," Hibbert said. "Paul and myself, we wanted to make sure we got this for him as well. We didn't want this to be our last game."
(Then Hibbert said a couple of less smart things which resulted in an NBA fine.)
Having won their first division title in nine years, the Pacers are one win from advancing to the NBA Finals for only the second time in franchise history.
They lost to the Lakers 4-2 in 2000. They haven't played a decisive seventh game in the conference finals since losing to Chicago in 1998.
Amazingly, they've done it against a defending champions many had as invincible after the Heat won 27 straight during the regular season.
Indiana won the boards 53-33 and dominated Miami 44-22 in the paint.
Looking just like his Cleveland days, James led the Heat with 29 points on 10-of-21 shooting ... and no-one else scored more than 10.
Miami's Big Three - James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh - went just 14-of-40. As Americans like to say: "Do the math." Wade and Bosh were a combined 4-of-19.
Called for an offensive foul midway through the fourth quarter, James lost his cool, running from one end of the court to the other.
It cost him an additional tech and Heat assistant David Fizdale drew another after overtly supporting the superstar.
Onward to the Game 7 few even predicted.
