NBA Finals: Oh my goodness
TweetSERIOUSLY now, no-one expected that. Sure, Spurs fans expected a Game 3 win today in the NBA Finals against Miami Heat.
That's only natural, despite the 103-84 Game 2 smashing in Miami.
Maybe they even suspected a double-digit win, at best.
But a 113-77 rout with the third highest winning margin in Finals history?
Come on now.
Who even thought San Antonio had the firepower to contemplate such a thing?
Oh yes. And did someone mention Tony Parker was sitting with a hamstring injury from part way through the third quarter?
"We got what we deserved," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.
"Every shot they wanted to get, they got. We did not disrupt them."
Apart from a 9-0 run by LeBron James to close the third quarter, he was again scoring well below his best and Miami desperately needed something special from his two running mates in the "Big 3".
But neither Dwyane Wade nor Chris Bosh could deliver, combining for six points in the second half, and four of those (from Wade) when the result was already in the books.
Miami got the 2006-style Wade in the first half but that ended after the interval as he finished with 16 points.
Bosh grabbed 10 boards but again was MIA in offence with 12 points and only two second half shots.
In stark contrast, Danny Green, who scored 27 points for the Spurs - including 22 in the second half - was almost as stunning as "Jeri Ryan, space babe" with his own "7-of-9" from beyond the three-point arc.
Green so far has outscored Wade 56-43 in the Finals series as San Antonio has stormed to its 2-1 lead.
Then there was Gary Neal.
He buried a playoff career-high 24 points while Kawhi Leonard finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds and four steals, delighting a crowd of 18,581 at AT&T Center.
The Spurs went on two monster second half runs - a 23-8 surge to start the third quarter and a 13-0 run to begin the fourth as they outscored Miami 63-33 in the second half.
San Antonio also closed the first half exceptionally with Parker nailing an off-balance corner triple, Green blocking a shot by James and the ball swept forward for Neal to swish a three as the buzzer sounded.
James had 15 points on 7-of-21 shooting, 11 rebounds and five assists, but missed 11 of his first 14 shots and never looked comfortable.
History is now on the Spurs' side as the Game 3 winner in NBA Finals series that are split 1-1 has gone on to win the title 12 of the past 13 times.
Game 4 in the best-of-seven series is on Friday morning, our time, in San Antonio.
The challenge for Miami will be to bounce back - as it has throughout the playoffs - and deliver another miracle.
