NBA West - Duncan does it in O/T
TweetMEMPHIS went on a stunning 15-2 run to force overtime in Game 2 of its Western Conference Final against San Antonio today, only to be bounced out 93-89 by Tim Duncan in the extension.
The Grizzlies had looked grizzly again at the Alamodome, trailing 70-83 a third of the way through the last quarter and staring down a 0-2 deficit in the best-of-seven final.
Spurs point guard Tony Parker was en route to a career playoff-high 18 assists with his 15 points and Memphis forward Zach Randolph - held to two points in Game 1 - again was off to a 1-of-10 start.
But he finished with 15 points and 18 rebounds as Memphis barnstormed back to tie it 85-85 on Mike Conley's runner in the lane with 18.2 seconds to play.
San Antonio supersub Manu Ginobili was hit with a flagrant foul for grabbing Tony Allen's arm on a fast-break layup which saw the Grizzlies' guard crash to the floor.
Allen iced both free throws and with the additional possession, Conley drove for the match-saving basket, on the end of a closing 7-0 Memphis run.
San Antonio, having led by as many as 18, looked irate it had squandered what had looked a certain win and rallied in overtime.
Duncan opened with a layup, then made a tie-breaking putback on Parker's missed jumpshot before adding an ungainly runner that bounced high of the back rim before tumbling in for a 91-87 buffer with 68 seconds left in the extension.
Jerryd Bayless hit a jumper for 89-91, then Parker missed one of two free throws with 14.6 seconds left, leaving the door slightly ajar.
Bayless' three-point attempt from the left wing never looked any chance and San Antonio "held serve" for a 2-0 series lead, heading to Memphis.
Bayless and Conley both scored 18 to lead Memphis.
Duncan had 17 points and nine rebounds, missing most of the second half with foul trouble.
"I hate that we gave up that big of a lead in that situation," Duncan said.
"But we were good enough to go to overtime and not let it affect us and get a win there."
Unquestionably, Duncan led from the front in that.
