NBA West - Mills a boon
TweetPATTY hit the court today and with more than just a handful of heartbeats left, signalling just how much San Antonio dominated Golden State in Game 5 of the Western Conference semi final.
Our Man Mills nailed a triple with his first open look as the Spurs took GSW to the brink of elimination with a comfortable 109-91 win in San Antonio.
While it was great to see Mills play, the truth is it was our other Aussie, Warriors' starting centre Andrew Bogut, who was the key to this game.
And for the first time in these playoffs, Bogey looked like a man who has been playing injured.
He managed just 18 minutes, had two points and six rebounds but tweaked his ankle in the second quarter and sat for most of the half.
He opened the third but clearly wasn't the same presence, San Antonio winning the boards.
The Warriors hung tough to trail just 51-54 at halftime, despite Bogut looking hurt, Stephen Curry second-guessing himself, Klay Thompson battling and Jarrett Jack leaving no doubt his name isn't secretly Jarrett Good-Shot-Selection.
How did they stay in it til then? By scrapping and hustling. And Harrison Barnes.
Spurs point man Tony Parker was back to his All-Star persona of Game 1 with 25 points and 10 assists in 34 minutes.
The Warriors bungled their defensive rotations, giving open looks to Kawhi Leonard (7-of-8 for 17 points) and Danny Green (6-of-10 for 16).
In contrast, Curry had his worst game of the postseason with nine points on 4-of-14 shooting and four turnovers.
Thompson had four points on 2-of-8.
San Antonio shot 51.9 percent, with 10-of-21 triples.
For Golden State, Barnes had 25 points and 17 rebounds to become the first rookie since Tim Duncan to score at least 25 points in consecutive playoff games.
But the Warriors go home to Oracle Arena trailing 2-3 and battling just to avoid elimination.
"They won the ballgame and we got out of character on both sides of the ball," GSW coach Mark Jackson said.
"This is a heavyweight fight. We'll be fine. We're excited for Game 6. My guys will bounce back. This is where it gets fun."
