NBA West - Spurs grind Grizzlies
TweetTHEY say one swallow doesn't make a summer - or even a summer holiday, for that matter - so Memphis will content itself it has a second game in San Antonio this week.
After all, Game 1 of their Western Conference Final today was grizzly for the Grizzlies, the Spurs connecting on 14-of-29 three-point baskets en route to a convincing all-the-way 105-83 win at the Alamodome.
Memphis' first trip to the Western Final was nightmarish from tip-off as the Spurs controlled the play - and Grizzlies star Zach Randolph - to lead 31-14 after one quarter.
Tony Parker paired 20 points with nine assists for the Spurs, Randolph ultimately held to just two points, embarrassingly shy of his 19.7 postseason average.
Australia's own Patty Mills saw 5:14 of daylight and used it to nail his only shot attempt - a triple - and to dish an assist.
San Antonio looked every centimetre a team in its eighth conference final of the past 15 years.
Kawhi Leonard (18 points at 70 percent, 4-of-5 triples) and Matt Bonner (12 points including 4-of-6 triples) helped guarantee San Antonio set a club record for three-pointers in a playoff game.
Quincy Pondexter led the Grizzlies with 17 points, joining in the three-point barrage with 5-of-9.
"San Antonio played extremely well and we did not," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins summarised.
The Grizzlies looked promising at 2-0 ahead - yeah, the tongue is in the cheek - but the Spurs scored the next five points and never looked back.
How will that impact Game 2?
Randolph will be a different player for one.
"So he had an off night," Parker said of the Grizzlies' forward beast. "But I know he's going to come out strong in Game 2."
That's why they play best-of-seven.
