NBL Assist - the TV Show
TweetYOU want fan interaction? You want people to have a stake in your NBL team, a rooting interest? It's time for a reality show to pick the last guy on the roster.
Fox did it with soccer and the A-League, and World Wrestling Entertainment had a terrific reality show - honestly, the only one I've watched from start to finish - called Tough Enough, hosted by the legendary "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.
They brought in wannabe young wrestlers from various independent shows, legitimately trained them, knocked one out each week (figuratively speaking) before finally leaving it to a panel of judges to determine the ultimate winner.
If a legit NBL roster spot was up for grabs - say the development player spot in the 10 - and it was going to be a five-week (five show) process, do you think the NBL could garner some TV interest?
Would ONE-HD go for it?
And if not, why not nbl.tv branching out into something other than games?
How about something directly for the fan? Let them watch some preseason activity, gain an insight into what goes on and help prune down the wannabes?
Emails, texts, twitter, Facebook - there's a bunch of interactive ways it could be done.
You think Kings fans wouldn't jump aboard a show like that to pick Shane Heal's last roster guy?
Or Tigers fans to pick Chris Anstey's last guy?
If it was nbl.tv, it could be market-specific and we could have eight different versions going, one in each NBL city.
Heck, so many clubs have had or will have an "open gym" session or something similar for outside roster chances and guys who fancy themselves as NBL players in the making, that could be turned into the show.
You bring in a squad and run them through their paces. But instead of just the coach and his panel doing the weeding, fans get to have their vote.
Crazy?
A bit of fun?
Your call. But filling roster spots 10, 11, 12 often is an afterthought anyway so why not make it one the fans can get a piece of?
Let's see the kids' skills on show. Let's hear how they started at this SEABL club or that one, or how they played State juniors, whatever their stories are.
Can you imagine some big WA kids getting post-up tips from Matty Knight at the Perth sessions?
Or Jamar Wilson showing off his handles to wannabe guards in Cairns?
Does it have potential as an idea? Again, your call, but with the large Sudanese population now calling Australia home for example, how exciting might it be unearthing the next big surprise?
Good stories to be told, too.
Just something different and positive. Why not?
