Carr cruises and Hanks banks a record

SYDNEY Kings import Andrew Carr last night set a club record in the defending NBL champs' road rout of a very ill Illawarra while in Melbourne, Southside Flyers recruit Hannah Hank produced a career-best performance in a stunning WNBL takedown of Tasmania after the Jewels led by 14 early.

The Hawks opened sporadically against Sydney, Sam Froling still trying to find form and touch, Milton Doyle back in the version no-one likes and only Tyler Harvey offering a scoring threat.

Harvey had Illawarra's first 12 points and led the Kings 12-11 at one stage. He finished with 15 for the quarter of the Hawks' 19, Sydney ahead by two.

But that was that. Whatever resistance Sydney was expecting to encounter after that disappeared like Harvey's court-time (22:53 with a long sit between his starting explosion and the next time on-court), Doyle's shooting prowess (4 points on 1-of-5 FG), Kelan Martin's shooting ability (2 points on 1-of-10) and Froling's complete loss of confidence.

The usually reliable big man scored a single point from his 1-of-4 free throws and 0-of-3 field goal attempts.

If not for late signing Makur Maker (24 points at 75 per cent, 2-of-3 threes, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal), Dan Grida's customary tenacity (unrewarded with extended minutes, as has become the norm) and Lamar Patterson dishing five assists, Illawarra devolved into an embarrassing caricature of itself.

Enough about the losers, and that's the best description of how the Hawks looked for three quarters, the champs were all business.

Matthew Dellavedova remained sidelined but Torrey Craig continued with his "oh yeah, this guy legit played NBA" form, and Kendric Davis dished 14 assists, matching Arnas Velicka and Carlin Davison's equal season highs in that stat.

Carr, who looked as if he was running on fumes in a couple of games and parked outside the arc too often, turned keyway killer.

His 20 rebounds off the bench is a new Kings club record, to which he also added 16 points at 75 per cent, with a sweet 2-of-2 3-pointers, an assist, a steal and a block.

Makuach Maluach remains one of the league - if not the game's - great shooters, his 13 points at 80 per cent with 2-of-3 threes. Seriously, Sydney needs to find him more shots. It is a genuine shock now when he shoots and misses!

And yes, we all saw it. The Kings were having so much fun against their supposed "arch rival" that Xavier Cooks even knocked down 2-of-2 free throws.

How do you know the Kings are going well? When the X-Man is nailing free throws or sinking a three.

In Melbourne, the Jewels ran up a 28-17 lead at the first break at the SBC and it very much appeared all that energy and enthusiasm Southside displayed in its first round loss to Sydney was for nought.

But that neversaydie attitude rookie coach Sam Mackinnon already has instilled shone in a 28-18 second period by the Flyers that completely swung the momentum.

Tess Heal (21 points at 80 per cent, 5 assists, 2 steals, 4 rebounds) rallied Southside who again had its Fearless Fledgling Flyers take off.

Maddie Ryan quickly was en route to 14 points, Sakima Walker adding 16 at 86 per cent and Haylee Andrews dishing a career-best eight assists.

Southside's 29-16 third quarter should be marketed worldwide as how commitment and self-belief, when everyone has bought in, produces brilliance.

Hannah Hank was huge all game, delivering a career-best 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting, a couple of assists, steals and blocks thrown in for good measure.

Missing forward Keely Froling (calf) and with her temporary replacement Mikaela Ruef offering precious little, Tasmania ran out of warriors to stave off the Flyer onslaught.
