Knight in shining armour and Bourne supremacy

ISABELLE Bourne delivered her best game for Sydney as the unbeaten WNBL leader saw off Canberra, while new Perth import point guard Brandon Knight showed his bona fides with two big endgame plays that secured a gripping one-point win for the Wildcats over battling Melbourne United.

Bourne, who, like Townsville's Alex Fowler, has struggled to find her WNBL touch since returning from the Opals' World Cup campaign, opened the scoring at Quaycentre and went on to finish with a season-best 24 points at 69 per cent, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block.

It wasn't all easy going for the Flames though as the Puoch sisters, Megan McConnell and back-to-back 3-pointers from Amy Atwell saw Canberra skip out to a 12-4 buffer.

Alex Wilson's introduction changed the Flames' look as superstar Lauren Nicholson got rolling and when Jaz Shelley closed the quarter with a triple, Sydney was ahead 23-19.

By mid second quarter, that lead bulged to 12 at 34-22 but the Capitals were far from done. With Nyadiew Puoch en route to 19 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal and 2 blocks and Atwell active - though her 18 points did come off a less-than-flattering 5-of-14 shooting - Canberra hit the front in the third period.

A sweet three by Wilson tied the game up again at 48-48 and from there the Flames would not be caught.

It was a different story across the country in Perth where the host Wildcats had a 40-minute long arm wrestle with Melbourne United before Knight became the game's hero for home fans.

With United ahead 100-94 courtesy of a Joe Ingles three inside the last two minutes, Melbourne looked as if it had done enough to escape the west with a W.

Kristian Doolittle (23 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists) drove hard to quickly cut it back to 96-100, then on Perth's next attack, accepted a pass from Knight after a Dylan Windler offensive board and swished a 3-pointer for 99-100.

Luke Travers (26 points at 58 per cent, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and a block) tipped in a Cole Anthony (19 points, 3 assists, 2 steals) miss - the duo had completely dominated various stages of the contest - and again at 102-99 Melbourne looked safe.

No so, Elijah Pepper (22 points, 6-of-6 free throws) drawing a foul and converting both freebies for 101-102 and with two possesions left in the game, the next play would be critical.

Leaving nothing to chance, United coach Jacob Chance called time-out to diagram the final play but Knight stood up under the United basket to draw a charging foul from Anthony.

It was a big call, Anthony fouling out on it and, depending on which fanbase you are from, either a great call or a shocker. Regardless, it gave the Wildcats a final possession, Knight (20 points at 53 per cent, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) with a pull-up jumpshot that won the match 103-102.
