New Boomers have a crack at old China
TweetBEFORE the naysayers who have reviewed China's team for the Sino-Australia Challenge and compared it to today's new-look Boomers combination slam Andrej Lemanis' first team, bear this in mind.
David Andersen, Aron Baynes, Andrew Bogut, Ryan Broekhoff, Matthew Dellavedova, Dante Exum, Joe Ingles, Nathan Jawai, Daniel Kickert, Aleks Maric, Patty Mills, Brock Motum, Brad Newley, A.J. Ogilvy, Mark Worthington and probably a few others I cannot slot into my random (albeit alphabetic) list, probably would come into consideration if this was a World Championship/Olympic year.
It isn't, so please chill and instead reflect on a few oddities.
The team which finished last in the NBL in 2012-13 - the Adelaide 36ers - supplied one-third (four players) for Lemanis.
That either says something about the Sixers' coaching, the talent available or, maybe even that a now defunct NBL club (Gold Coast Blaze) supplied three of those players in Adam Gibson, Anthony Petrie and Jason Cadee.
Then again, Gibbo is the 36ers' captain so there is just no shying away (again) from the fact that team under-achieved last season.
Still, the appropriate action was taken so why wallow in the past?
Daniel Johnson gives the Boomers a versatile big-man and Luke Nevill a traditional seven-footer who will bang with China's Great Wall.
The Chinese have brought 10 of their 12 London Olympians for the four-Test series which tips off tomorrow at Perth Arena and can be watched live on NBL.TV or later on Fox.
That includes a couple of seven-footers, five-Olympics veteran Zhizhi Wang 214cm and Zhaoxu Zhang at 221cm.
Wang logged time with NBA outfits Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Clippers and Miami Heat while 206cm guard Yue Sun also boasts NBA experience after a short stint with the LA Lakers.
League leading scorer Ben Madgen (Sydney Kings), All Star Game MVP Chris Goulding (Melbourne Tigers ), Cam Gliddon and Clint Steindl (Cairns Taipans) complete the Boomers' NBL component.
Guard Igor Hadziomerovic is playing at Boise State under the watchful eye of John Rillie and forward Cameron Bairstow has been showing his wares at University of New Mexico.
