THE WNBL's Melbourne Boomers have lost co-captain Elyse Penaluna for the 2016-17 season but I'm hearing Abby Bishop will be her likely replacement.

A championship winner with the Boomers in 2010-11, Penaluna has had persistent knee issues and has made the call to have surgery, outing her for the season. 

Bishop, the league MVP in 2015 - interrupting close pal Suzy Batkovic's run of four MVPs in the past five years - is believed to have responded to a Boomers' SOS.

Cut from the ill-fated Rio Olympics Opals - along with Batkovic and fellow WNBA players Jenna O'Hea and Rebecca Allen - Bishop would be a huge pick-up for the Boomers on the eve of a cut-throat season.

Now on the Boomers staff, Lauren Jackson is a close friend of Bishop's and former teammate at both Seattle Storm and Canberra Capitals.

Think she might be in the recruiting mix somewhere?

Last night, Dandenong Jayco Rangers beat the Deakin Uni Boomers 64-52.
