Boomers blast Philippines in Cup qualifier

DAVID Okwera swished a corner three for the last basket of a 92-49 demolition by Australia over the Philippines tonight in Perth, closing this current FIBA World Cup Asian qualifier window advancing its record to 6-0 and for the second time in four nights, having all 12 players on the roster score.
The Boomers defence was stifling and exemplary, forcing 19 turnovers, holding the Philippines to an abysmal 28 per cent shooting and 4-of-24 threes.
Hustling, relentless pressure on the increasingly agitated Filipino backcourt created further frustrated decision-making which made the Boomers' job easier the longer the game progressed.
Bryce Cotton (game high 21 points and equal game-high 5 assists) stepped up with a 13-point first quarter as Australia raced 33-14 clear.
Josh Bannan also was a big factor, en route to an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Early foul woes restricted Alex Condon and Tyrese Proctor (16 points in the second half) was 0-of-7 at halftime as the Phillipines contained Australia to a paltry eight points in the second quarter.
The Boomers' two field goals in the period both were lay-ups by Mitch Creek, the other four points from the stripe as the Phillipines showed signs of life.
Those quickly were snuffed out by Australia's 22-10 third quarter, the coffin lid slammed firmly shut with a 29-12 final term.
Taran Armstrong fouled out after giving the Filipino guards nightmares as the Boomers snapped out of their second quarter funk for a very comfortable victory.
