Random dribbling: Boom boys
TweetCALM down now Boomers squad analysts. Cam Gliddon, Igor Hadziomerovic and Ben Simmons all have been added to Andrej Lemanis' first Boomers squad.
Turns out Glidds wasn't an oversight at all but had to confirm his availability while Igor (Or is it Eye-gore, as in Young Frankenstein?) and son-of-a-gun Benny are pretty good calls.
Hadziomerovic - it isn't that hard to pronounce, just read it along slowly instead of trying it all at once - is running around at Boise State in Idaho, under the watchful eye of assistant coach John Rillie.
And Simmons has been attending high school at Montverde Academy in Florida, courted by top colleges and being tipped for an NBA future.
Here's how the story appeared today online: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/basketball/teen-gun-ben-simmons-joins-boomers-squad/story-fndekpx4-1226643237153
IT'S been a pretty fair week for Mitchell Young, the 22-year-old Brisbane forward who was named in Lemanis' initial squad of 17.
Young, 22 and 206cm, has been doing his thing at Saint Mary's College in the US but today was revealed as Cairns' Taipans' newest signing.
He will slot into Dusty Rychart's role and tweeted today: "Very excited to have signed with @CairnsTaipans... Can't wait to get to Cairns and get to work."
Young has signed on for two years, rejoining his former Gaels teammate Clint Steindl, not only in Cairns but also at the Boomers.
"The Taipans are in a really good place and I know (Aaron) Fearne and (Mick) Downer are both very good coaches," Young told the Cairns Post.
"I know it's a hard-working culture and that's where I want to be.
"I played with Cam (Gliddon) in the AIS and of course played a lot with Clint at college and I'm keen to get back to Australia and get back on court with them."
ANDREW Bogut was called for one of the softest (and incorrect) fouls of Golden State Warriors' Western Conference playoff series against San Antonio today.
Spurs star Tim Duncan - who complained after Game 4 about Bogey's alleged rough play (I would have rung Chuck and organised an immediate fine!!) - got the benefit of the doubt early in Game 5 when he drove and Bogut made great position but still copped a foul.
Wry smiles all around.
As it turned out, Patty Mills outscored Bogey in this one, hitting a three-pointer with his first shot.
The injured Aussie big man only had the two, though an equally memorable fast break basket it was too.
RE-SIGNINGS continue at WNBL clubs with Jo Hill back at Adelaide, Gabrielle Richards back at Bendigo, Darcee Garbin and Toni Edmondson back at West Coast.
I hear Karen Dalton has signed a second lifetime contract to coach the Sydney Flames too.
YES, definitely list me in the pro-camp in relation to Luc Longley's new role as an assistant coach of the Boomers.
So let's switch tack to the "it's a small world" department.
Just heard from dual-Melbourne Tigers NBL championship-winning coach Al Westover - now coaching successfully in Japan - that Longley's college coach, Gary Colson, recently was out there.
"He was doing junior clinics and checking out a possible coaching job in the bj league," Al told me.
"He's a sprightly older guy, about 80 I believe, and I was surprised to hear that he may want to coach again.
"Anyway, he told me he went to Perth to recruit Andrew Vlahov.
"He was working him out at Perry Lakes, and in walked Luc. He asked Andrew who's that, and Vlahov said that's my friend. He didn't get Vlahov, but signed up a 7-foot future NBA center instead."
And if you recall mid-last NBA season when the Jeremy Lin "Linsanity" hit in New York?
It came to light multiple-championship winning NBL coach Brian Goorjian coached Lin at a tourney in China.
"It just so happens that Colson was also Goorjian's college coach at Pepperdine, that also featured the great Dennis Johnson," Al added.
(This one is for you Simon, because I know you've missed them.)
THE Past, the Present and the Future walk into a bar. It quickly got, gets, is going to get very tense.
