Random dribbling: That's more like it

OK, this round has started to make a bit more sense, though, so far, it has been owned by the wee people.

In Auckland, Cedric was entertaining and the 36ers a bit too familiar down the stretch, leading to as comfortable a win as 14 points can be.

At Bulleen, Kristi the heart-breaker did what she does best and hit two monster shots to guarantee Bendigo stayed unbeaten for another night while Bulleen stayed winless for another evening.

In Sydney, Corin Henry was spectacular with 23 second-half points, again proving that The Atom is an under-rated DC super-hero unlikely to ever get his own movie but certainly one whose secret identity is now known to all who follow NBL.

At Townsville, Jessica Bibby did all she could but her Caps could not rise to the occasion against the Fire.

Over in Perth, Katie-Rae Ebzery (27) and Alicia Poto (18) were stand-outs but the Waves finally found a way to win, making it an 0-2 start for Sydney.

Up north, the Hawks flew into Cairns and maintained a recent tradition between these two clubs of only winning in the other guys' gym. Wollongong's 68-point total is a losing score most nights, except when the Hawkers can hold Cairns to 58.

JUST on the off chance you may be interested in how I went with my tips, I got the men's ones correct but bombed again in the women.

Misogynist appears to be the country's "word of the week" so I will take that because I'm starting to hate the women's comp!

I'm giving myself Townsville's win over Canberra because I said the Caps would win IF Lauren Jackson played ... and she didn't.

I had Bulleen and Sydney in the other games so, yet again, Kristi has the last laugh.

THOROUGHLY enjoyed the Kings-Tigers game on ONE-HD (without all the palsy "Shane" shite on commentary), the atmosphere at the SEC looking and sounding terrific.

Glad to see Ten maintained its basketball theme of the evening with the scheduled program after the replay an insightful look into what all those referee call signs actually mean.

Least I presume that's what "Puppetry of the Penis" was about.

WOW, the influence of "Captain Silverbeard" over in the West never ceases to amaze me.

Since he started this co-captaincy trend with Shawn Redhage and Brad Robbins, it has spread to more than half the NBL now.

Not only do we have Adam Gibson and Nathan Crosswell co-steering at Adelaide, Alex Loughton and Jamar Wilson co-captaining Cairns, Tommy Greer and Matt Burston co-hosting at Melbourne, but even Sydney now has James Harvey sharing leadership duties with Ben Madgen.

Rusty Hinder at Townsville must wish Peter Crawford or Jacob Holmes could join him for the coin toss, it gets so lonely at centre-court for that one all-important and essential captaincy duty - winning the toss and kicking with the breeze.

SPEAKING of men of influence, congratulations are in order for NBL veteran and one-time Townsville, Cairns, Hunter, Singapore and Adelaide guard Brad Davidson on his appointment as coach of South Australia's Under-20 men's team.

Can barely believe he got it because he doesn't fit the usual mold of the book-coaches we churn out over here. Hell, he hasn't even mastered standing at the end of the court with one or more assistants, arms folded, quietly whispering and sagely nodding their heads - a clear prerequisite.

Tsk. All that sleeves-up, get involved, teaching stuff, and coming from a position of personal experience and knowledge? That won't get you far here Bradley.

But best of luck anyway. Maybe you can break the mold.

Wait just a second.

David Spear has the Under-18 SA team? I feel like my barman here, but is this some kind of joke?

Since when has SA returned to appointing former NBL players with a huge stake in and love for the game?

So good to see.

BACK when Fox was covering the NBL, it planned to do a doco on Davidson but shelved it.

"Too expensive. Too many locations," I was reliably informed.

(Yes, I am aware I have done that joke for Ben Knight and Matt Shanahan in the past. Thank you for your emails.)

FOR those who love a memorable date - and hey, who doesn't - October 5, 1991 (just a week and a bit ago was its 21st anniversary) the last game of NBL was played at Apollo Stadium.

Perth 102 beat the 36ers 99.

GOOD to see Steve Carfino knows his Georgetown college players, speaking as he did re Tigers import Kevin Braswell.

Steve told us Braz hails from Georgetown which has produced so many big names, then trotted out a couple, including Patrick Ewing. And let's not forget, Patrick Ewing.

A LEOPARD, a jaguar and a cheetah walk into a bar.

The barman looks up from where he is cleaning glasses, stares at them and says: "What is this? Some kind of joke?"
