Riding the roller-coaster
TweetPAUL Woolpert's sacking and Rob Beveridge's surprise admission have rocked the start of the Easter break in a manner rarely previously seen.
In case you just came in, Woolpert's NBL contract was cut short by Townsville Crocodiles - he still had a season to run on it - while Perth championship coach Beveridge revealed he will be a free agent when the season ends.
Before you jump to a conclusion Bevo's timing is a little odd, being between Game 1 and 2 of a semi final series with Wollongong, it really wasn't planned on his part.
He just answered my questions candidly.
That led to this story at adelaidenow: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/basketball/beveridge-on-the-way-out-in-perth/story-fne5rixg-1226609024553 and it was while checking the status of all the NBL coaches, Woolpert's dismissal at Townsville suddenly became evident and led to: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/basketball/townsville-crocodiles-sack-coach-paul-woolpert/story-fne5r6q3-1226609021714
Townsville got on the front foot and made its announcement, CEO Pat Reidy breaking the news officially.
"It is always a tough decision to make when people’s livelihoods are at stake but that is professional sport and we all know what we are up against when we choose this career path," he said, assistant Liam Flynn also shown the door.
"Paul and Liam have served us well in the time they have been with us. However we feel we have to head in a different direction to achieve what we, our sponsors and supporters expect of us.
"It’s time for us to bounce back as a club and as a definite championship contender."
Former Brisbane Bullets championship coach and Gold Coast Blaze mentor Joey Wright was the first named linked to the Crocodiles' gig, many believing the club has spoken to him previously.
But Wright has assured me that was never the case.
Now?
Well, that could be a different story.
The newspaper version of the Beveridge story in The Advertiser tomorrow will carry quotes from Wildcats CEO Nick Marvin, who many believe has been butting heads with Bevo in recent times.
Both are excellent at their jobs and it would be a shame if there was fire where that smoke exists. But Marvin had this to say regarding Beveridge's future after the online story was already out.
"I recruited Bevo and as long as I'm here he'll always have the option to work for me.
"All staff, players and coaches are welcome to stay at the Wildcats for as long as they want, as long as they continue to share our core values and common mission.
"But we also support their individual career goals and dreams.
"As to the actual details of individual contracts for everyone, that is best left for the post-season to avoid distraction at this important time in our season.
"I think all fans would also want that from our club."
Not sure if Nick has that last part right. Pretty sure fans would prefer to know Bevo, who so far has taken Perth to the championship, the semi finals, the Grand Final and now again is a win from the Grand Final Series, has already been resigned for next season and beyond.
But I could be wrong.
They were pretty interesting quotes, nonetheless.
If Beveridge is not retained out west and does not win the Boomers role, Townsville and Adelaide loom as potential NBL destinations.
That is if the Crocs don't go with a Wright, Brendan Joyce or even return to Trevor Gleeson in the meantime.
And just to quell a growing groundswell which wants to believe 36ers legend Brett Maher already has Adelaide's coaching job stitched up, Sixers CEO Dean Parker categorically says no-one has been spoken to yet about succeeding Marty Clarke.
Thinking Rob Beveridge will be.
It means a season which ended dramatically, with the final two spots in the playoffs undecided until less than week ago, now looks likely to have just as interesting a postscript in the off-season.
