Brown crowned as Taipans leave United Untied

IT'S way too easy to write off new players - particularly imports - too soon, as Cairns' struggling US point guard Jaylon Brown proved last night in Melbourne, scoring 14 of his 20 points in the final quarter of a whopping 35-14 turnaround that saw the Taipans squeeze the life from United.
Brown has had his struggles, of that there's no argument, often resembling an NBL1 import rather than one for our biggest league. But last night was his redemption and arrival as he helped Keanu Pinder, Reyne Smith, Jack McVeigh, Jonah Bolden and Malique Lewis fulfill their potential in a statement road win.
Melbourne drew a season-best 40-point haul from Cole Anthony, but it came on 11-of-26 shooting, with 16-of-17 free throws in that mix. It was all very much the Anthony Show for United, with the shot attempts by Melbourne's next three players in total still less than the former NBA guard.
Add just one assist to the point guard's tally - United's best assists return was three by Luke Travers - and it's not hard to see how Cairns took full advantage of Melbourne's reliance on isolation basketball.
The Taipans stormed home as Pinder, who had a weird match all-around, compiled 27 points at 71 per cent. He had two very quick fouls which originally hampered him, then worked his way into the contest, then had a major league brain fart.
Bustled to the floor at one end by Anthony for a no call, infuriated he ran straight back at Anthony and deliberately knocked him to the floor. That went over well with the officiating crew.
But there he was in the late game, playing his role as the Taipans won their fourth match of their past six on the road at United.
What a thriller Brisbane fans enjoyed before Tasmania took the W in overtime at Boondall Entertainment Centre.
Taran Armstrong (29 points at 53 per cent, 4-of-7 threes), Will Magnay (22 points at 71 per cent, 9 rebounds, 6 assists), Josh Bannan (22 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists) and Dakota Mathias (19 points, 3 steals) all stood up for the JackJumpers as they came from behind to tie the game before dominating the five-minute overtime.
Trailing 89-91, the JJs drew up a play which saw Armstrong drive baseline before throwing an audacious behind-the-back pass to Bannan for the game-tying bucket.
Bullets playmaker Arnas Velicka, 0-of-12 from the floor going into the extension, scored first but from there, Tasmania's big guns fired up.
Brisbane centre Tyrell Harrison (24 points at 60 per cent, 12 rebounds) made some uncharacteristic blunders and despite Max Mackinnon and Nate Hinton both going for 21 points and Velicka adding 13 assists, Magnay's triple from the corner put the final exclamation mark on a top road success.
