The Hunt for Red October

THE Hunt for Red October - a.k.a. the pursuit of a big red head (or two) in Townsville - is continuing unabated with news Melbourne United has interest in Diamon Simpson.

That means Melbourne has bailed on trying to lure "Big Red" Brian Conklin, the reigning league MVP, from the Crocodiles.

Where will Big Red be in October?

Playing in the NBL.

The question is will Simpson, 27 and 201cm and pictured above during his stint in the NBL as an Adelaide 36er in 2011-12, be United's fall back position?

It hardly would be a terrible fall back, given Simpson - like former Melbourne players Lucas Walker and Patty Mills - is a St Mary's alumni who averaged 14.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 27 NBL games.

He also posted 12 double-doubles and had five 20-point performances with Adelaide.

Simpson most recently has been playing in Spain. Coincidentally, so has another recent United signing, Chris Goulding.
