Time for Kings of the Kings

REALLY looking forward to seeing how the Sydney Kings celebrate their historic 25th season in the NBL this year.

Last season Perth celebrated 30 years in style and Townsville celebrated its recent 20th anniversary in similar grand fashion.

In both instances, the clubs celebrated their histories, announcing their respective anniversary teams and staging a "legends" game before the date-relevant NBL fixture.

They were huge successes, done with style and class - unlike when Adelaide 36ers' Invincibles celebrated the 25th anniversary of their championship by being rushed on court in the two-minute quarter-time break of an NBL fixture. Shame. Shame. Shame.

(In fairness - yeah I know, it's a quality I'm trialling - the 36ers did a much better job with the 30th anniversary of West Adelaide Bearcats' 1982 champion and they had far less obligation to do that so, clearly, lesson learnt.)

But now it is the Kings' turn to wow us with their innovation and imagination and I, for one, can hardly wait, knowing Sydney's record for handling these sorts of things with just the right amount of pizzaz and class.

(Witness the Mike Wrublewski Stand, for example.)

How will the Kings celebrate their tip-off as an NBL club in 1988 with the merger of Sydney Supersonics and Bankstown Bruins ... oops, I mean the merger of the Sonics and West Sydney Westars?

Will they launch a social/traditional media contest to name their 25th anniversary team?

Will they trot out their past club greats - Dwayne McClain, Chris Williams, Matt Nielsen, CJ, Ebi, Shane, the Daltons, Ian Davies anyone? - at a ball/dinner/gala and announce their "King of Kings" Team?

Will they schedule a "legends" match before an NBL fixture?

Will they do the lot?

Like the rest of the basketball world, I wait for announcements with baited breath.

ACTUALLY, coming up with the Kings' best 10 of all time is very challenging.

Sydney fans, time to step up. Toss me your choices and I'll run your best selections, giving the Kings a head start.

Nah. It's not really restricted to just Sydney Kings fans. Pick your all-time 10 best Kings - the starting five (point guard, off guard, small forward, power forward, centre) and backups for each role, restricting the ten to just TWO imports too.

That makes it challenging. The coach is a piece of cake, obviously, with three-time championship boss Brian Goorjian the monty.

But, just in case you like Bob Turner or Claude Williams for that matter, select your 10 players and coach and send them to me here at botirnagy@gmail.com or tweet me at @boti_nagy and I'll publish the best entries on Saturday, June 8. I'll also collate the entries for the team as you pick it.
