United keen on Ekene

EVERY day is fascinating where Melbourne United is concerned.

Today I’m hearing the NBL outfit is continuing its search for the right frontcourt import to complement the revamped group which now includes Boomers’ World Cup and Oceania selection Chris Goulding and 2015 Most Improved Player Todd Blanchfield.

And – the envelope please – today we are drawing out (drum roll) … Ekene Ibekwe.

Yes that’s right. Ibekwe, who carved a piece of NBL history for himself when he became just the second player to score a championship-winning basket with his game and series-winning jumpshot in Game 2 of the 2015 Grand Final against Cairns.

My (e)mail is Ibekwe, the bane of the Taipans (as you can see above) is on United’s wish list and the club has cooled on Ronnie Brewer, who also would be an excellent choice.

Breakers coach Dean Vickerman confirmed in May that Ibekwe would not be back to defend the championship with New Zealand.

"We have been in discussions with him and right now we couldn't meet his requirements with the money that we have available so right now we've wished him well and thanked him for anything he gave to the club," Vickerman said then.

Ibekwe, 29 and 206cm, last season averaged 11.8ppg at 59.6 per cent, 6.1 rebounds and 0.9 assists.
