Welcome back ... not Cotter?
TweetYES, I know I had Damian Cotter pencilled in as Shane Heal’s heir apparent as Sydney Kings' next coach but my (e)mail has gone all atwitter that Sin City may be welcoming back one of its own.
As in … drumroll … Matt Nielsen.
An NBL MVP and Championship-winner with the Kings – along with a star-studded international career with the Boomers and as a star in Europe – Nielsen has been in Perth since retiring and returning to Oz.
He has worked with the Wildcats’ “bigs” and definitely has the makings of a coach.
But then again, so too has another wellknown Perth basketball identity – one Lucien Longley.
Luc, the three-time NBA Championship starter with Chicago Bulls and Aussie Olympian, now is an assistant coach with the Boomers.
Again, I am hearing LL has his hand up for the Kings’ job. And no, I didn’t mean Leroy Loggins.
(Or Lex Luthor.)
Luc or Matt would present serious challenges to Damian’s chances, as would the odd coaching guru or two within an hour’s drive of the Bridge.
Ah, you’ve got to love the off-season, even if the NBL cannot get its act together sufficiently to release the full free agents list a full two weeks and two days after the end of the Grand Final.
