WNBL TV deal done

GOOD news to be revealed soon by Basketball Australia and the ABC - the WNBL television deal will continue in 2013-14.

Fingers crossed but my (e)mail is the two-hour timeslot will return too so we won’t be getting edited highlights of the timeouts.

Live games on Saturday afternoons is the go, as far as I can find out without compromising my ABC insider, B1, too much.

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking, BA?"

And that would be to allow Canberra Caps to live stream their home games rather than come all hot and heavy on a club for showing initiative.

Just a thought.

THE Sydney Kings have been up and about with members today meeting Manchester United's finest, AJ Ogilvy, James Harvey, Kevin White, Kyle Armour and Sudanese development player John Macham doing a little cross-training with the superstars of world soccer.

Meanwhile coach Shane Heal was off experiencing the cold weather of Mount Gambier.

Heal was in the SEABL’s South Australian outpost to watch the Pioneers host Frankston tonight, ostensibly to see how signings Brad Hill and Ben Allen are travelling.

Despite the state’s finest efforts, somehow Heal was smuggled across the border and even had time to run individuals with his two key signings.

SUMMER League watch:

MATTHEW Dellavedova started for the Cavs and played 23:07 as Cleveland beat San Antonio 72-66.

Delly had four assists – including one to help clinch the game – two rebounds and a steal but did not make a basket, fellow Aussie Chris Goulding seeing 8:07 of daylight for two boards and a foul but no points.

Aron Baynes had a 13-point, 10-rebound double for the Spurs.

Tom Abercrombie saw 1:55 for a basket and a rebound as Phoenix beat Portland  72-64. But that basket was something special, a lob for an Abers dunk off an offensive baseline inbounds.

His Breakers championship teammate and NBL MVP Cedric Jackson played 6:11 for three points and a rebound for the Suns.

PHILADELPHIA’s search for a new 76ers' coach still looks wide open with recent leaks of possible options.

ESPN has reported the job will go to Brett Brown or Michael Curry, noting the former Boomers boss  will be the last candidate interviewed for the job vacated by Doug Collins on April 18.

Brown, 52, has worked under some of the sport’s leading coaches.

These include his father, Bob Brown, Rick Pitino, Lindsay Gaze, Barry Barnes and Gregg Popovich.

Joining Popovich's staff at San Antonio Spurs in July, 2002 as an assistant/director of player development, Brown moved to the bench as an assistant coach for the 2006-07 season.

The Spurs have won three NBA titles during his tenure and went within a few non-calls of a fourth this year at the tail end of Game 6 before losing in Game 7 of the NBA finals to the Miami Heat.

Brown played under Pitino at Boston University from 1980-83 and in 1981 was team MVP.

In high school, Brown played at South Portland (Maine) for his father, a New England Basketball Hall of Fame coach.

In Australia before head coaching North Melbourne Giants to the 1994 NBL title and back to the Grand Final in 1995, Brown worked under Gaze at Melbourne Tigers and alongside Boomers coach Barnes for Olympics in 1996 and 2000.

Curry, 44, who has NBA head coach experience at Detroit Pistons, would be considered a safe pick due to his familiarity with the team. He spent the past three seasons as Collins' associated head coach and is under contract for another year.

The Sixers reportedly have interviewed Boston Celtics assistant coach Jay Larranaga and had permission to interview Chicago Bulls assistant coaches Ed Pinckney and Adrian Griffin, and Atlanta Hawks assistants Quin Snyder and Kenny Atkinson.

Four other NBA assistants - David Fizdale (Miami Heat), Melvin Hunt (Denver Nuggets), Chris Finch (Houston Rockets) and Kelvin Sampson (Rockets) - have been mentioned as candidates.
