Wortho bound for Tigers
TweetCONNECT the dots and have dual-Olympian Mark Worthington playing in Cairns or suiting with Perth if you prefer, but he will be in Melbourne and taking over the power forward role vacated by Seth Scott.
Wortho, 29 and 202cm, played with the Tigers before his stint at Gold Coast and after a brief post-Olympics flirtation as an AFL prospect, he headed to Serbia where he was playing well before a season-ending shoulder injury.
Having won an NBL championship as well in Melbourne while with South Dragons, Worthington and his young family are comfortable living in the city.
He also is close with Tigers coach Chris Anstey.
In conversation today, Worthington - the closest Australian basketball has to an Andrew Vlahov Mark II, and, not coincidentally a WA product - was somewhat bemused by the extent of rumours, innuendo and speculation about his future.
Currently in Melbourne, he said he was unlikely to be going anywhere else and keen to play NBL again, especially with today's revelation about the league splitting from Basketball Australia.
"It's very, very exciting," he said.
"In all honesty, business people is who we need running the league now."
But, like most of us, Wortho's enthusiasm also was tempered with the harsh reality that if the NBL gets it wrong this time, it most likely will be its final chance to claim the hearts and minds of the non-committed.
PERTH is casting its net across the Pacific in its search for a coach to take the Wildcats into their 28th successive playoffs appearance next season.
But there is no great sense of urgency for Australia's top NBL club, with Wildcats managing director Nick Marvin USA-bound to interview a few possible candidates.
Most of the usual suspects' names also are among the 20-or-so applications already across Marvin's desk, pursuing one of the most coveted coaching gigs in the country.
Not sure Rob Beveridge's name was among them.
STRONG tip is Perth co-captain Shawn Redhage has his agent seriously reviewing his free agency options.
How would he fit alongside A.J. Ogilvy?
Or - imagine this? - back at the Breakers. Now that would be a great story.
