Brad&Boti: Our Olympians, middling or medalling?
TweetWE'RE back, former Kings NBL captain and Sydney multi-media maestro Brad Rosen and I are back with our Brad&Boti podcast talking Olympic Games and whether selectors had it right or wrong on their Boomers and Opals picks for Paris.
As always, it's "ladies first" as we dissect the ins and outs of the Opals team coach Sandy Brondello predictably picked to try and return Australia to the medal podium after the disasters of the Tokyo and Rio Games.
Let's be blunt, as good and as consistent as our Opals have been on that international stage, the past two Olympic campaigns have been anything but memorable.
But with the return of the G.O.A.T. Lauren Jackson for her fifth Olympics, the good news is she has taken home a medal from her four previous Games.
What an extraordinary athlete Lauren Jackson truly is. At 43, she remains a bona fide superstar. Sure, she's no longer the athlete who at one point was the best woman basketball player on Planet Earth, but she is phenomenal.
What do you plan to be doing at 43, or what were you doing at 43? Pushing for a starting spot on an Olympic basketball team?
That's where LJ, after giving birth to two growing boys, overcoming career-ending injuries, making a triumphant Opals return at the 2022 FIBA World Cup, suffering another horrendous injury ... is, back and playing with such vigour you would not rule out her appearing in the starting quintet in Paris.
Nigeria, France, Canada - getting out of the group will be tough but very achievable for the Opals and then ... who knows what goodies may lay in store?
Turning to the Boomers and Brad is upset the team is missing its "X-Factor" while I'm more miffed that Matisse has missed.
Let's remember when Matisse Thybulle debuted at the Tokyo Olympics, such was his impact that for the bronze medal game - arguably THE most important match in Australian men's basketball history - he was promoted to starter. And we won!
So he's good enough to start on Australia's all-time most successful senior men's team ... yet three years later there's no spot for him in Paris?
And what about that group? Canada, Spain, Greece. We manage to move on to the second phase and who knows what may occur? But just as easily, the Boomers might drown in that pool!
