Cox on fire at Indigenous Challenge

ROHANEE Cox scored 39 points today to lead Australia’s Maal-Ya Indigenous women’s team to a 64-58 win over Vancouver Strathcona at the World Indigenous Basketball Challenge in Vancouver.

While Cox, 37, a Beijing Olympian with the Opals, the WNBL’s Most Valuable Player in 2009 and the Maher Medallist in 2007 as Australia’s International Player of the Year, was magnificent, Deba George had 27 points for the Apunipima Australian Indigenous All Stars against Vancouver in the men’s match.

Curt Ah Wang added 12 points but the Aussies went down 69-72 and now are drawn to play Bantu Zambia tomorrow.

Having beaten them 96-51 in a warm-up practice game already, the Aussies will start fairly confident.

Renai Fejo had 20 points and 11 rebounds as Australia’s Indigenous Djookyaans (Sisters) women’s team beat Heiltsuk Nation 59-50, Vanessa Michael with a game-high 15 rebounds.

All the action continues tomorrow.
