'Cyclone' Tracey sparks Trailblazer initiative

THE call is going out to any and ALL WNBL players, past, present and even future with the announcement of a new project being driven by former superstar and multiple championship winner Tracey Browning, designed to reconnect and grow the league under the banner of "WNBL Trailblazers".

Browning's plan - and anything she turns her hand, energies and passion to are bound for success - is to create a powerful former players cohort to support past, current and future players.

A WNBL Life Member, Browning has the full backing of Cygnett WNBL management.

The goal in the first 12-months is to reach out to as many former WNBL players as possible to firstly make them aware of the alumni, and link them to the WNBL. There are further grander plans afoot.

"A number of functions will be held around the country, providing an opportunity for players to reconnect, share stories, and rekindle friendships, and the WNBL website will dedicate space to the alumni," Browning said.

Her long-term vision is for the WNBL Trailblazers by the league's 50th season to form a charitable foundation enabling this respected alumni to support disadvantaged young players.

They already receive some aid through similar such initiatives best represented by the annual Pete's Bar Lunch in Melbourne and the Free Throw Foundation's regular functions in Adelaide.

“Reconnecting people from the early WNBL days has always been a passion of mine and I am beyond excited to be collaborating with the WNBL to form this alumni group and have the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy for the WNBL and it’s amazing athletes,” Browning said.

The league launched in 1981 so if you do the maths, you know the 50th-season goal is not far away.

But first, spreading the word out to and among past players is the priority and the very first WNBL Trailblazers function will be when the league resumes from the FIBA Olympic Qualifiers on Saturday, February 17.

The function will be held in Adelaide before the Adelaide Lightning-Melbourne Boomers game.

It is entirely appropriate for two reasons.

Adelaide is where the WNBL's existence first was hatched by the late Ted Powell (West Adelaide), Kay McFarlane (North Adelaide) and Brendan Flynn (Noarlunga City Tigers), and later endorsed and actively supported by fellow coach, St Kilda's Bill Palmer.

St Kilda may now be long gone but Melbourne Boomers (formerly Bulleen Boomers) this season celebrate the club's 40th in the WNBL. That makes the Boomers the oldest existing club in the WNBL.

Invitations are being sent to everyone on the WNBL former players current database, with information about attending.

“The WNBL has been around for 44 seasons now, and every single player who has been part of it over that time has contributed to its success," current WNBL Head Christy Collier-Hill said.

"We’re therefore thrilled to be developing an alumni program – the WNBL Trailblazers – led by WNBL Life Member, Tracey Browning, to reconnect with all of these fabulous women, show them we value their contributions, and engage more with them in the future to help continue to grow this incredible league.”
