FLASHBACK 135: Oct.20-25, 1969

*FLASHBACKS, my irregular "lucky dip" where I just reach into my drawers of old Australian basketball stuff and transcribe or post whatever I find for you.*

LAST month's re-release of The Beatles' Abbey Road album on its 50th anniversary, digitally remastered as well, made me recall arguably the greatest Australian Women's Basketball Championship.

And yes, it tipped off 50 years ago, today. So today, I didn't grab a random historical memory but specifically set out to find my copy of the program from that hallowed major opening event at the Apollo Stadium in Adelaide.

It was such a phenomenal tournament, it deserved nothing less than a proper revisit. And yes, I found my program, hardly in pristine condition or digitally remastered but a wonderful journey nonetheless.

Pat McCarthy's Queensland team was one of its very best and, as closer study of the program reveals, you may spot the odd telltale clue it is possible I may have had a boyhood crush on Janelle Colwell, these days better known as the mother of Brad and Mia Newley and wife of one of my other idols growing up, Arthur Newley.

Six members of that Queensland team successfully sought political asylum and didn't return to their home state, at least not for a couple of years, four settling in SA.

The Final was a titanic South Australia V Victoria struggle, Glenys Bauer hitting a long bomb which today would have won the match but in this instance, saved it to force overtime. And that's where Marie Goldsworthy was absolutely outstanding, leading SA to a 65-63 victory.

Ah yes, those were the days...
