Montreal can add a new 36ers dimension

EXPECT Adelaide 36ers to shortly formally reveal SEABL superstar Daequon Montreal as their second import for 2014-15, alongside playmaking guard Jamar Wilson.

The Sixers’ NBL Championship winning guard and former Boomer John Rillie, an assistant coach at Boise State University from where Montreal was recruited, long has touted him as “NBL-quality”.

Montreal, 26 and a 202cm forward comfortable on the wing and at power forward, is averaging 24.0ppg at 50.2 per cent, plus 7.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game this season with Dandenong Rangers.

Last year in the SEABL Grand Final, he led the Rangers to the title with a 46-point man-of-the-match performance in the Championship game against Mount Gambier Pioneers.

It means the 36ers again will base their game on speed, Montreal joining Anthony Petrie, Luke Schenscher and BJ Anthony in Adelaide’s frontcourt.

But coach Joey Wright also will need to make some adjustments in the light of three-time club MVP Daniel Johnson heading to Poland.

While the 36ers always knew Johnson was heading out, finding a replacement and/or an import to cover his absence always was going to be a challenge.

Montreal brings a different and exciting skill set and is sure to ignite passions at Adelaide Arena.

His confirmation alongside Wilson, World Cup-bound captain Adam Gibson, London Olympian Peter Crawford, Mitch Creek and Brendan Teys, leaves the 36ers with one roster spot left.
