NBL: Kings rule, OK

THE apologists around the 36ers will be quick to blame jetlag but let's be clear - Sydney Kings humiliated Adelaide 102-80 today, conscientious objectors offering more resistance than the Sixers.

After being touched up by a whopping 52 points last weekend by the NBA's Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City, Adelaide was supposed to have taken several lessons from that encounter.

Today we were to see the fruits of those lessons.

Instead, we had more of the same passive, token defence at Qudos Bank Arena, where it was harder to find a seat than a driving lane against the 36ers.

The much-hyped Jerome Randle-Casper Ware battle was a fizzer as Ware directed traffic and his willing teammates ran first-half rings around Adelaide's traffic cones.

The 30-14 first period by Sydney meant this was over by halftime, at which point the 36ers already had let in 59 points.

Andrew Bogut's wicked behind-the-back move to the hoop was gold, Jae'sean Tate did as he pleased, Brad Newley helped himself to 18 points and Dan Kickert hit 4-of-7 threes because, clearly, no-one at the 36ers thought to hand around the scout notes.

Eric Griffin's cause was not helped by the officiating, making him largely irrelevant but Adelaide did show a great deal of heart to battle back from trailing by as many as 24 points, to get it to seven. Or eight. I'm not sure. I confess I was dozing about then.

Daniel Johnson led the scoring with 26 points but, more importantly, in a post-game interview categorically ruled out "jetlag" as having any impact in this outcome.

It was more just lag.

For the Sydney Kings, they enjoyed a bunch of 40-minute club records, including taking 40 3-point attempts (they made 13) and 102 points being their highest home score to open a season.

Their 26 assists in achieving that tally also is a new club record, and Will Weaver became the second coach this century to start 2-0 in his Kings' career and first since since Brian Goorjian in 2003, Sydney's first championship season.

SYDNEY KINGS 102 (Newley 18, Tate, Kickert 16, Moller 12, Ware 10; Newley, tate 6 rebs; Bruce 7 assts) d ADELAIDE 36ERS 80 (Johnson 26, Randle 16, Drmic, Moore 10; Johnson 7 rebs; Randle 5 assts) at The Kingdome, Qudos Bank Arena.
