NBL: PotW from there again!

SOUTH East Melbourne aren't just the talk of the town, they're the talk of the NBL right now, having chalked up wins over two of last season's finalists in their opening two games.

That's no mean feat and last week it was captain Mitch Creek winning our plaudits as Round One's Player of the Week.

In Round Two, Bryce Cotton definitely put his hand up for contention with a 23-point first half as Perth routed Illawarra.

He finished with 28 points at 53 percent, including 5-of-9 threes, seven assists and four steals in 30 minutes of the blow-out.

DJ Newbill missed Cairns' loss to Brisbane but turned in a blinder in the Taipans' 88-89 road loss to Illawarra, scoring 26 points including some huge 3-point heat missiles in the last quarter of this round's only thriller.

It was another quality performance but, at the risk of being labelled with having a Phoenix bias, our judging panel here at the head offices of Basketball On The Internet, Boot Makers and Antique Restorations could not go past South East Melbourne's John Roberson.

Come on now. The man uncorked 9-of-11 threes in a 30-point, 29-minute tour de force as the Phoenix flew out of Brisbane's reach.

Overall he shot at 71 percent, grabbed a couple of rebounds and dished six assists. As far as South East Melbourne goes, he was magic. He also is our Player of the Week.
