NBLTotW6: United just wild about Perth

COME on now. Round 6's NBL Team of the Week is obvious. After last night closed the round with the Melbourne Cup Eve clash, the Perth Wildcats were the only team on anyone's lips by ending United's winning streak, albeit with the home team losing Luke Travers, Ian Clark and Ariel Hukporti to injury in-game.

But coming on top of the Wildcats' home win over Adelaide, the double dose of success was as good as it has been all season for the once mighty Perth.

Of course, import superstar Bryce Cotton returning to form - he averaged 26.5ppg over the two wins - was not insignificant, and nor was coach John Rillie finally settling on the bodies he wants to lead his club back to the Promised Land.

But what a finale it was to go into overtime. Right when you think you've seen it all as Sydney and New Zealand find so many different ways to stuff up in the endgame, it's a case of Melbourne and Perth saying: Hold my beer.

Jordan Usher hits the big threeball as regulaton draws to a close but Matthew Dellavedova, with heroball play #27, drives and scores, Perth Next Star Alex Sarr called for a foul on the play.

Rillie activates his coach's challenge and wins it! No foul.

Watch the play again and going by Sarr's reaction when he hears the whistle, he thought he fouled.

But the call is overturned, only to today be again told it was incorrect by NBL Referees Boss Scott Butler. The foul should have stood.

So Delly makes the free throw and it's all over in regulation. Or it should have been. Instead on the "last play", he's called for a foul and earlier hero Usher has a chance to win it. But his free throws resemble mine in a playground with the wind blowing and the ball flat. And no net on the ring. And a wonky backboard.

United ran so many plays when the ball stuck in Delly's hands and not often enough in Chris Goulding's that the result ultimately was no surprise.

Especially with Travers, Clark and Hukporti lost so early. But let's take nothing from Perth, even if under-10s are taught not to jump in the air with the ball without knowing what their intent is. (Just a side note for Usher.)

Perth dominated the overtime from the get-go, with Kristian Doolittle doing plenty, with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, and Rillie finally recognising veteran Jesse Wagstaff (8 rebounds) and a cool head, still has plenty to offer this team.

With the Lynx yesterday claiming the WNBL's first round Team of the Week, it has been a good week for basketball out west ... just like them bad olde days.

PERTH WILDCATS 102 (Cotton 24, Doolittle 18, Sarr 17, Usher 12, Pinder 11; Wagstaff 8 rebs; Doolittle 5 assts) d MELBOURNE UNITED 95 (Lual-Acuil 25, Dellavedova 23, Goulding 19; Bowen 16 rebs; Ili, Dellavedova 6 assts) in overtime (89-89) at John Cain Arena. Crowd: 10,175

Our Team of the Weak as Pi$$ is Adelaide for, surprisingly the first time this season. But confusion reigned as Perth seized back the initiative, the 36ers ignored Isaac Humphries, had their point guards off the floor and had a love affair with a threeball that was unforgiving all evening.
