Opals opponents out in a week

AUSTRALIA's Opals a week from tomorrow will know their opponents for the crucial final phase in February of Tokyo Olympic qualifying, when FIBA conducts its official draw at its headquarters in Mies, Switzerland.

All 16 teams that will compete in the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments were confirmed at the weekend following the conclusion of the FIBA Women's Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournaments 2019, in Africa, Americas, and Asia-Oceania.

Japan, China, Australia and Korea progressed through Asia-Oceania, with New Zealand desperately unlucky not to make it after beating the Koreans by four in Auckland.

Australia took another welt from Japan in Kuala Lumpur, the Japanese having now beaten the Opals in their past three meetings since the 2017 Asia Cup.

The national teams of Mozambique and Nigeria claimed the two spots reserved for Africa, and the Americas tournaments saw Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico and the United States advance.

Six teams from Europe were already qualified via the FIBA 2019 Women's EuroBasket tournament.

The 16 teams heading into the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments are Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Great Britain, Japan, Mozambique, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Serbia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, United States.

Belgium (Ostend), China (Foshan), France (Bourges) and Serbia (Belgrade) will host the four tournaments in February next year.

FIBA's official "Draw Ceremony" to sort the 16 teams into the four tournaments will take place at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball, FIBA headquarters, on November 27.

The top three teams from each of these tournaments, consisting of four teams each, will qualify for the Olympics Games in Tokyo.

FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup champion the USA and the hosts of the Olympic Games, Japan, will play in the qualification tournaments but advance automatically through to the Olympic Games tournament regardless of their results.
