NBL TotW15: Soaring up the hit parade

WHAT an amazing round that was considering a few teams looked gross in one outing, great in another. Adelaide, Sydney and New Zealand spring to mind for example. But when it came down to selecting our NBL Team of the Week for Round 15, it was easy to go for the club storming up the charts with a bullet.

Brisbane went into its match against Tasmania without Nathan Sobey and needing to find a way to compensate for his absent 20.4ppg.

They did precisely that, the Bullets playing arguably their best team game of the season to bring the match down to a dramatic last-shot scenario.

Scores tied at 77-77, Bullets import Chris Smith caught the inbounds pass on the wing with 12 seconds remaining, sized up his defender Anthony Drmic, put on the shake-and-bake before letting fly with the match-swishing 3-point winner.

Backing up against surging Illawarra, Brisbane regained Sobey and he led from the front, scoring 22 points in the first half.

There was no shortage of teammates standing up, Smith again prominent, Tyrell Harrison super active, Mitch Norton with his best offensive game of the season, Isaac White hitting a big late three to put down the last of the Hawks resistance, Shannon Scott showing how to share the ball.

This was Brisbane's fourth consecutive win, something the Bullets have not done since Derek Rucker had an Afro.

Brisbane is the club on the rise and Round 15's Team of the Week.

New Zealand put up its hand for Team of the Weak As Pi$$ consideration but ultimately - and reluctantly - it went to Tasmania.

The JackJumpers had two fouls up their sleeve before going into bonus in that fateful last quarter against Brisbane but clearly the information was not passed on, Smith allowed to play around unchecked before launching his game winner.

Then the Jackies needed a straightforward two-point bucket on the last play to close their double-overtime thriller against Illawarra but Jordon Crawford chose instead to throw up a 3-pointer which missed with time still on the clock.

A simple pick-and-roll play would have done it but instead the Ants pooped their pants, making them the easy choice for our less coveted acknowledgement.
