WNBL PotW: Some folks work overtime

THERE were no shortages of Player of the Week nominations this round in the WNBL in a weekend which saw upsets and a classic come-from-behind overtime epic.

Sophie Cunningham ensured Melbourne got across the line in a tight clash against Adelaide, and Townsville's Tess Madgen sent a message to Opals selectors as her Fire beat Canberra.

Then it was Micaela Cocks, Darcee Garbin and Bridget Carleton getting Townsville up over Sydney, where Alice Kunek had a 30-point haul.

Last round's winner Shyla Heal scored a career-high 30 as her Bendigo were smacked in Perth, Marena Whittle and Nadeen Payne leading the Lynx assault.

But when it came down to it, the game of the round closed the round delivering another derby classic as Southside somehow manufactured a victory over Melbourne in overtime.

Ezi Magbegor was huge for the Boomers with a 24-point, 12-rebound double in a game which still was big for Melbourne considering Lindsay Allen was a late withdrawal, Sophie Cunningham fouled out and Maddie Garrick was KO'd by a friendly fire head clash with teammate Toni Farnworth late in regulation.

Leilani Mitchell and Mercedes Russell drove the Flyers home but it was Jenna O'Hea with a captain's game who kept them in it and gave them their shot to win it.

O'Hea suffered ankle and wrist injuries but battled on gamely and produced a 19-point (with three 3-pointers), six-rebound, two-assists, four-steal, one block tour de force which ensured persistence paid off and Southside won the game, sealing first place.

Yes, we were impressed as O'Hea joined only Adelaide's Brianna Turner as a dual winner this season of our Player of the Week accolade.
